A Poll: How will the human society end?

I’m amillenial but I chose “Rapture” to indicate that a divine, supernatural apocalypse will destroy human society.

I’m amazed that so many people think society will end because of pollution. Yes, that’s a possibility, but only if we do nothing for several generations. In the meantime, it’s much more likely that terrorists will get hold of nuclear or biological weapons.

I voted other.

IMHO, humans will ignore climate change until it’s too late. At that point, agriculture will collapse and a large chunk of the human population will starve.

The rest will turn to warfare. Societies will collapse.

I doubt every human will die, but humanity will be set back to the pre-industrial era.

Merry Christmas!

LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL. Think of the Little Ice Age-nobody even knew it was happening yet civilization went on! Plus you would have to kill off an enormous amount of human beings to prevent a climbing back to industrial levels in a generation-even if a few doctors or engineers survive civilization’s rudiments can survive.

I’ll be happy (hell, ecstatic) to be proven wrong!

/Not negative on humanity

//Just on collective human “intelligence”

Flashback, to Prodigy[sup]®[/sup]

Industrial society depends on a vast network of exchange in order to continually supply resources and components. Even if all the doctors or engineers survive, if lines of supply or resources are cut off at key points, industrial society would collapse. That does not mean that civilization would collapse, because there are non-industrial forms of civilization.

Yeah, there’s such a vast grey area between current industrial modern civilization and “a few tens of thousands of people scurrying around picking through rubble like rats.” Non-industrial forms of civilization (I like that phrase, acsenray!) don’t necessarily have to be unpleasant. They also don’t come with air-conditioning, granted, but that just means my neck of the woods (currently referred to by modern industrial civilization as the DFW metroplex) would be mostly abandoned in the summertime. But all those rubble-picking rats would come scurrying in the winter!

Perhaps I’ve watched too many Bond films, but what if some future sadistic and suicidal super villian intentionally detroys all the people of the earth <in lieu of 1 million dollars>. This is impossible now, but perhaps not so out of the question in the future. A future well connected mass-murderer might be able to intentionally deflect a large asteroid into earth, cause an out of control industrial accident, and release a horrible plague - all on the same day. If 300 years from now, a person like Kim Jong Il is capable of doing these things it might be more than the rest of the world could handle.

I don’t think it will happen until the sun expands to destroy the Earth. Humanity could survive most everything else. The asteroid hit depends on the asteroid hitting the Earth and how big it is.

Also put my vote for possible Large Hadron Collider type wormhole mishap. Probably not, but they can’t understand all the possible ramifications of what they are doing.

The end of humanity will be famine. Either a water shortage or a crop failure. Eventually, we won’t be able to feed everyone and we’ll turn on each other. We’ll fight over fresh-water sources. People will starve. Population plummets.

That’s covered in the OP.

Also covered in the OP.

Ah yes the whole Population Bomb theory… I’ve read some of the predictions by Ehrlich in the People’s Almanac and they had worse accuracy rate than mystical seers.

I voted “Other.” I suspect that Yellowstone, or some other Super-volcano will erupt, wiping out all human life on the Demi-hemisphere on which the eruption occurs. The rest of the world will have to suffer massive famines as the growing season is eliminated for a couple years.

Instead of The Year Without a Summer, we’d have the Decade Without a Summer.

There is a famous deep ecologist who stated: “The human race is inherently ego-maniacal in that we believe we could do something to the biosphere to kill off all life on earth. We may in fact do something to kill our species, but we can never kill the bioshere.”
That being said, I think the human race will continue to evolve, just like every other organism on the planet. We will switch from fossil fuels to some other sustainable fuel in the next several centuries, we will explore the vast reaches of our galaxy, we will find other life forms, we will understand there is no dualism on the planet or in the universe even. After that, I dunno.

Birds. They will be what kills everyone with some virus and because they fly and shit all over everything. Big migratory birds should be destroyed before they destroy us. They crash planes even now and need to be removed from the environment, in fact that will even lower CO2 emissions too. I don’t think the small song birds are involved although pigeons could be, but mainly the large Geese and such are the danger.

Ducks too? Even chickens? Mmmm… chicken yum yum.

I guess if we destroy them by eating them that would be ok.

No, just migratory ones, some ducks would be a yes. A side benefit of doing the killing now is indeed we can eat them, or provide them as famine relief and so on, yes. If we wait for a bad bird flu, it will be too late. Look at a list of what birds spread the last bird flu, it wasn’t cardinals and such and some small breeds of ducks can stay but not the big ones. Now if it is too big to fly, like a turkey, chicken, no problem keeping that around.

I voted other. I’m pretty sure someone is going to hit the red button (with or without an official war in place, which is why I didn’t pick the war option). And it’s all going to go up POOOF. Rapture isn’t the cause of the end of humanity, it’s what occurs before the end of humanity.

Just like Otto von Bismarck said, “it will be because of some damned silly thing in the Balkans.”
