A poll on current events: racism vs. coronavirus

After 20 years on message board (even as moderate as SD) replete, festooned and stuffed to the the gunnels with “USA, USA, fuck yeah”, that’s a pretty small price to pay.

More or less. By any objective/numerical measure, the coronavirus is a far direr danger to the nation.

The only way police brutality could be a worse threat would be if America were having several 1989 Tiananmens in its cities every month.

Agreed. At least if the video evidence is sufficient, McNecksitter and his cronies will get some form of prison time and that instant matter can come to an end. Now the pandemic, quite another matter.

All of this. Left of center, didn’t vote.

But it’s badly put in three different ways.

For one, it puts “stopping” coronavirus against merely “protesting” police brutality; which are not equivalent actions, and don’t imply remotely equivalent results.

For two, it pits the two against each other, as if there’s no way to protest police brutality that doesn’t mean giving up entirely on reducing coronavirus cases. Which isn’t true.

For three, we’re not, at this point, going to stop coronavirus; it’s way too late for that. All we can do right now is reduce the impact (which is certainly worth doing, says the person with four risk factors who would like to stay alive.) We might, very eventually, eradicate it again; but that would require a very good vaccine, which we may or may not ever get but certainly don’t have right now, plus years and years of hunting down every case on the planet. So as phrased it pits an impossibility against a possibility; but appears to be claiming that the impossibility is possible.

You think convicting one cop (if they even do) is going to end the BLM problem? You’re an optimist. And unrealistic. With any luck we’ll have a vaccine in a year or so. If there is a vaccine against racism, I’m not aware of it.

No, heavens no, the INSTANT matter can come to an end, meaning conviction of the bad cops can at least end that part of the story.
