This was pretty much true even where I went to college, at an all-female school. I knew of only two cases of “just once” sexual experimentation. Otherwise girls who had sex with girls also _dated_ other girls. I did know maybe four or five girls who only dated other girls while in college and (as far as I can tell from Facebook) have only dated guys since then, but all of them openly identified as bi in college.

I suspect many are counting something other than sex, maybe kissing or even just flirting, as “experimenting”.
