I can’t point to a specific issue or anything, but I’ve always had it in my head that May was Peter’s great-aunt. Not trying to fanwank her appearance — I think that back in the early to mid-1960s, she was (at least sometimes) referred to that way in the comic books.

She had 12 pregnancies, but she lost two so I had ten aunts and uncles. My mother was her second child and hated the enormous spread of ages among her siblings, which is why her kids are all less than a year apart - she was basically pregnant for 5 years straight with us.
I would suggest that ‘heroic grandmother hunts down her grandchild’ has a different vibe to ‘heroic mother rescues child’.
