Okay, this is so dumb, but can some men weigh in with their opinion on this? We live in Chicago, which needless to say can get FREAKING COLD this time of year. My husband will not wear a scarf or hat, insisting that “Men don’t wear hats and scarves.” (Gloves are okay). Most men I know agree with his sentiment. So what about you guys? Ladies, anyone else as perplexed as me? ---

I’m not a fan of either scarves or hats. It’s not that I don’t think men wear them - it’s just I don’t see the point in a scarf; it never helps me feel warmer. If I’m skiing, a hat makes sense. But otherwise? nah… - Rick ---

When I was living in cold places I used to wear a scarf, earmuffs, my hood up, and two or three layers. I moved to California, so I don’t have to worry about that stuff as much anymore. pat ---

That’s silly. Hell yes I wear a hat when it’s cold enough. And I’d use a scarf too, if I could find mine. Walked my dog tonight in about 10-degree weather, wearing a winter hat, smiling from ear to ear. hat ok w/ me, but pass on scarf, never liked the feeling of sumtin around my neck, wether it be a scarf, turtleneck or a tight collored shirt. besides my neck doesn’t really get that cold. in very cold temps, I will weat a face mask ---

I personally like hats and scarves, but I live in Southern California, so those clothing items would only be used for decorative purposes. However, when I visit my family in Switzerland (like I did Christmas 1999), I gladly wear a scarf and a hat. ---

Don’t chalk it up to only men. I hate wearing hats or scarves too even when I did ski. And, as I can’t stand mittens, only gloves! ---

Well, I’m from S. Not only is my fedora a smart-looking fashion statement, but it keeps my head warm. As for scarves, I don’t wear them that much anymore (although I still have one), but I used to when I went to college on the sunny shores of Lake Erie. I knew a voice teacher who said that the best way to avoid winter colds was to cover the throat and chest with a wool scarf. I know an awful lot of redneck worn-out-John-Deere-ballcap types around here that have nothing against hats. Personally, I wear them a lot. Ballcaps, fedora, knit “boggan”, whatever the weather calls for. I used to wear a scarf, but it wasn’t as good for keeping me warm as simply turning up the collar of my coat. O’course, Kentucky doesn’t generally get as cold as Chicago, but there are exceptions. ---

A Minnesotan here. I wear a hat while skiing, sledding or snow shoveling. I don’t even own a scarf. I wear baseball caps all summer. Go figure. ---

I don’t wear 'em for fashion, but I’ve found that an army-surplus scarf has a lot of uses. When it’s cold (rather, when I GO someplace cold) it keeps my neck warm. If it’s really cold I put it loosely around my face. If I’m in the desert, it keeps the sun off of my neck. I can put it over my head and put a hat on top for more protection. If I’m working on a film I often use it as a bandana to soak up the sweat. The only downside is that its colour makes people think I have nylons around my neck. I wear two hats when I bother to wear one at all. If I’m out in the sun and it’s hot, I wear a floppy “boonie” hat for protection. If I’m just looking to keep the sun out of my eyes (e.g., if I’m flying) or if I just feel like wearing a hat I like to wear a ballcap (Usually my AOPA hat). When I ride my motorcycle in the cold or wet, I put on a bandana “bandit-style” before I put on my helmet, tucking the loose end into the collar of my jacket. It keeps my face warm and keeps out drafts. ---

My husband doesn’t much care for hats-as-cold-weather-protection, but he does love the scarf my mom crocheted for him a few Christmases ago. He’s got a full head of long hair, so his head stays pretty warm. * * * Changing my sig, because Wally said to, and I really like Wally, and I’ll do anything he says, anytime he says to. ---
