Wow…you could be my aunt, writing about her stepdaughter who basically all but abandoned her oldest son (whom my aunt basically raised), barely speaks to her younger son and daughter, but posts on Facebook about how her current flavor-of-the-month’s kids are her pride and joy. My (step?grand?)cousin (the oldest son) about busted a vein when he saw that entry. ---

Good job. Kids do best if they have someone, anyone, who loves them, cares about them and is interested in them. This person does not have to the the kid’s parent. In my experience, people whom you know to be total hypocrites and who also post all the religious crap on FB are really struggling. They want to be the person they are posting about but are unable to do so for whatever reason. I always try to encourage them to reach that goal if at all possible even if it involves me saying near-religious claptrap (or as close to it as I can reach without crossing any personal ethical boundaries myself since I an a non-theist). I don’t think encouraging religion is a good thing in general, but it may be the best choice for these kinds of folks. ---

I always joke that I seem to run a teenage flop-house. I may have 7 teens here on a Saturday night. I do get taken advantage of by their parents. I feel kinda like a teen dumping ground sometimes. I costs me a lot in pizza and soda, but I know where they are, what they are doing, and that they are safe. I also know everything about everything- teens will tell you everything eventually if you are willing to listen. They are often horrendous gossips, so if they don’t tell me directly, I often overhear it. Sometimes I call their parents and say “I have a house full on hungry teens and no food.” That usually wins me some pizza or fried chicken. On Sundays, I drag them all off to my UU church or put them to work in my community garden (we’ve taken 196 pounds of fresh, local, organic produce to our local food bank so far this year). I talk with them all frankly about sex, drugs, alcohol, politics, religion and money and if their parents don’t like what I teach them about these things, they are free to snatch them up and take them home. We never, ever leave them unsupervised and my primary house rule is “No sex, no drugs, no alcohol.” Other things are negotiable (language, dress, attitude) as they come up. But I do impress upon them that my house is a privilege, not a right, so while minor transgressions can be overlooked and/or worked through, continued misbehavior won’t be tolerated. (For example, one bigger kid was being intimidating and somewhat aggressive to another. I called him on it, described the behavior he was displaying and told him it wasn’t allowed here. It took two conversations, but he stopped doing this at my house. I think he still does it a little on the outside, but not here. Another example is throwing game handsets. Absolutely not allowed. If I hear the game getting out of hand, everyone gets a 5 minute break. Over time, they have learned to self-regulate.) ---
