A rational look at what Trump will/won't/can/can't do in his next term

Well, they didn’t rule that he could remain in office because his arguments on Texas were too stupid for even a five year old to attempt to justify. But this is a court that has now overturned Roe v. Wade (despite justices appointed by Trump saying in confirmation hearings that it was “settled law”), has several justices exposed as having numerous ethical compromises, and that Trump is likely to be able to appoint two or maybe three new justices under a Republican-controlled Senate overseeing confirmation. So you’ll pardon my skepticism about how the Supreme Court is going to be the unassailable bulwark that will protect us from executive overreach in 2025 and beyond.

No, Trump isn’t going to be more savvy or competent, and yes, he’s going to surround himself with toadies and supplicants. But the problem is that some of those people will be actually competent because he’s getting a lot of support and guidance from people who have been contemplating this ‘opportunity’ for decades, and it has become even easier to distract Trump with shiny things while “the adults” go about their business of trying to implement their plans. And the Republican-dominated Congress has essentially purged all of the moderates, and even the hard-right non-MAGAs in favor of people who will fall into lockstep with what has become the GOP, and these people will almost certainly vote to increase executive authority where it advances their goals. This is exactly what happened in Germany in 1933, and this scenario has too many strong parallels to ignore in the way you so desperately want to.

Not only he won’t but can’t. There isn’t even that much in discretionary spending, and it would take a major literal act of Congress to make major cuts to mandatory spending, which isn’t going to happing in a year. I guarantee that US$2T was just a random number Elon pulled directly out of his ass with no clue as to what it actually represents because he is a dumbshit that says stuff and then goes back to his staff and says, “I promised this so don’t make me look like an idiots, guys.” (True story.)

You’re right that Trump will blame Musk and fire him (if he actually appoints him to anything to begin with) but I’m desperately hoping for a bigger blowout, maybe even trying to have Musk arrested and deported for staying in the country illegally and working on a student visa. Please, God, I know we don’t talk much and I say a lot of snarky things about your peoples, but give me this one, please!

There is literally nothing he can’t do. The checks and balances on his power are the GOP controlled Congress and GOP controlled SCOTUS.

The Congress will do nothing, zip bubkiss. If you think they will keep the filibuster or anything else that might keep the current GOP majority from getting what they want you are deluded

That leaves the SCOTUS. And yeah I’ll admit there might be the odd most extreme thing Trump the current SCOTUS might maybe have second thoughts about. But we aren’t going to have that SCOTUS long, the more senior conservative justices will resign soon into the Trump term and be replaced with the most insane MAGAts.

We just have to accept the guardrails are off, nothing is off the table in the next four years (at least)

Then what’s the point of discussing anything? Of having or making plans and hopes? We might as well expect him to take Taylor Swift as a public sex slave. I might as well liquidate my retirement accounts and quit my job to flee to Brazil on foot.

So should we smother our children in their beds so they can be spared the Horrors?

Or do we do what we did from 2017-2020 and fight and defeat them again?

THEN. WHY. DIDN’T. THEY. DO. THAT. LAST. TIME.

You mean like the ones who unanimously rejected his arguments in 2020? I don’t recall Amy Coney Barrett issuing a writ of Trump Can Do Whatever He Wants, do you?

Errrrr yes remember the " the president can use a seal team to assassinate their opponent" side winning their case at the supreme court? Cos I sure as hell do.

And the justices Trump will get to appoint early in his term will make Amy Coney Barret look like Ruth Bader Ginsburg

BECAUSE. THEY. HAVE. GROWN. IN. POWER. AND. HAVE. A. BETTER. IDEA. OF. WHAT. THEY. CAN. GET. AWAY. WITH.

And what examples of this newfound power and wisdom can you provide? How is the 3-seat Senate majority they hold in 2025 more powerful than the 3-seat Senate majority they held in 2017? How is the House caucus that struggled to elect a speaker going to execute this agenda flawlessly? How is their 6-3 Supreme Court more powerful than the 6-3 Supreme Court they had in 2020?

I remember the Supreme Court ruling that the Supreme Court is the only body that gets to decide what constitutes an official act. Not exactly the move of a body that’s trying to give up its power.

You sure cut that sentence short, robbing it of actual meaning. Try again.

And you didn’t answer the question.

The question is answered in the second half, the part you refuse to quote. They have a better idea of what they can do, what they can get away with, and who will back them up. They have also built up their media base and gotten their followers to more and more abandon media outlets that don’t tell them what they want to hear.

So they have nothing, then.

This is too sad to even continue.

A wildcard that I think is different now is the Supreme Court. Then, it was 5-4. Now, it’s 6-3 and many of those 6 have axes to grind. Alito’s hyper-partisanship has been exposed, Thomas’ corruption has been exposed, Thomas’s wife’s involvement in Jan 6th is now known, Kavanaugh entered amidst a rape investigation that we’ve now learned was buried by the FBI.

We’ve watched them give Trump broad immunity. If they’re willing to do that, what will they NOT do, and why? This is Trump’s mask-off court, to go with 2 rubber-stamp legislative bodies. The question is not whether they’ll get full government approval, the only question is how much bullshit can they shove through the pipeline at once. Some of this will be limited by a lack of competence and resource constraints, but a great deal of harm will definitely get through.

I don’t think they’re going to deport 20 million people. I think they could put half a million migrants in concentration camps and the country would sigh and say “at least it wasn’t 20 million”.

If he wants to piss off a lot of people while acting completely within the bounds of the law, he could appoint a man as treasurer.

If you’d given me all day and a hundred guesses, I wouldn’t have finished that sentence the way you did.

Because the grimmest and most dystopian predictions about what Trump II might look like … could very well all be wrong.

So stick around and find out (SAFO)

That just isn’t the argument you think it is.

“Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany on January 30, 1933”

THEN. WHY. DIDN’T. HE. INVADE. POLAND. THEN.

See how that works?

@Smapti just wants you to point and laugh at them, ignoring all of the things the openly say they plan to do, because that always works to stop demagogues and their enablers.

Remember when Hitler got voted out and had to run for reelection?

Yeah, me neither.
