# A regretful farewell

Am departing from SDMB and from logging-on thereto – in all probability, for keeps. Not any kind of “upset” or “quarrel” situation between me and the site: just, an urgent necessity found – in the wake of a recent for me, rather awful situation – for me to do some cleaning-up of my act, as regards personal life. One “problem” aspect of that for me has been, in recent years, a rather bad case of Internet addiction. The worst component of that addiction, as regards impact on my life, has been the Dope.
“Worst”, because “best”, as it were – SDMB had become for me, the best and most time- and attention-demanding of fun; in the sort of way that crack cocaine – according to those “into” it – is the most excellent of fun. I’ve known no Internet board which even remotely touched the Dope, as regards being full of endlessly fascinating material on a vast variety of subjects (even for someone like me, with a relatively narrow range of interests), with a remarkable number of members extremely well-informed on said range of subjects; and in my view – not, I’m aware, in everybody’s – all happening in an, on the whole, good-humoured, benign and pleasant atmosphere. I’ll miss this scene greatly – it is its very addictiveness for me, which means it has to go from my life: for now, and – it seems likely – lifelong.

I have had those thoughts a few times myself.
Not for long. I predict (hope) you will be back.
Going to zero isn’t the solution. Learning moderation is the best solution.
At least that is what I tell myself. 🙂
Hopefully whatever happened in you your life to cause this is truly temporary and you will be able to look back on it with a shrug some day.

Re the just-above: editing-botchery, on my part.
Five-months-odd, on: thanks to all above, for kind thoughts --and for forecastings re returning. My life’s envisagedly “going supernova” late last years, proved less thus, than seen to be at the time. Have since then, done (letter, and spirit, of the law, and all that) a fair amount of “lurking”; have concluded that in the world’s current circumstances – with my being essentially “confined to barracks” because of the pandemic – an at least temporary “dispensation” is allowable, for returning to active posting. Best wishes to all on the site, in the present troublous times.
