A Republican is preparing to vote for a Democratic POTUS, sell him on your choice.

Actually I like this next one.

For summary purposes, he also wants to do away with the IRS, most cabinet departments and the Federal Reserve.

He is very good on personnel liberties with the exception of gay rights, where he appears to be very bad.

etc.

Jim

Granted it’s Wikipedia, but what you posted doesn’t sound isolationist at all. I’ve never really bought into Paul, but… do you feel like taking soldiers out of Korea or Germany would make you less safe? I agree that pulling out of the UN seems like a little much.

I believe withdrawing from the UN and our NATO obligations is isolationism. I believe pulling troops out of Korea & Germany is a bad idea as long as Putin appears to be little Stalin in the making and Kim the Despot rules N. Korea.

It takes longer to go through, but try his actual site. I find the man scary.

Jim

Putin’s a despot and a really bad guy, but I don’t think he merits a serious comparison to Stalin as far as European or U.S. security is concerned. As part of a larger point about how many countries the U.S. military is in, I think he may be on to something.

I’ll try to make time - for now I’m amused that taxes and tips for waiters is one of his few issues. I mean, I suppose I agree with him, but who knew it was one of The Issues?

I’m seeing an awfully paranoid tinge in this trade section, with a lot of scary "coulds"like

Well I just found out I cannot switch parties in time for the February 5th Primary in NJ.

This is from the State of New Jersey Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form.

My wife does have the option however, she has never voted in a primary.

So, help her choose a democrat to vote for in the Primary. I will pretty much just hope for Obama, Clinton or Richardson and vote from them in November. If it is Edwards, I will might still vote McCain or Rudy, but none of the others.

Because they could give the job to someone else and let Clinton play the position of a sort of ‘royal’, rather than tying Clinton down to the task of running a bureaucracy. Let someone else run the state department while they send out Clinton as an unofficial ambassador. In short, why have the First Lady be Secretary of State when you can hire a qualified minister to do that?

Yeah, my Dad knows Richardson, not like buddies or anything, but he’s been involved in NM politics for decades and deals with the governors from time to time. He thinks that Richardson is gunning for Sec State.

I also wonder what his relationship to the Clinton’s is after Bill hung him out to dry with the DOE. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had deals with both. Though, if he’s pulling for Obama I don’t know that Hillary would still want him in her camp later. But who knows what will restructure when the time comes?

I have admitted to being a hawk. I still believe in a strong US military even if I am switching parties. Now instead of being a Green Republican, I can be a Hawkish Democrat*. Apparently I am more comfortable being a contradiction in assumptions.

I think the more you listen to Paul and the more you read his words, the harder it is to like the guy. Some stuff sounds great and others parts sound crazy. He really is campaigning for revolutionary change and not just small changes. Maybe he is right, but I really think a lot of it just sounds crazy.

Jim

  • Actually, I will probably use the form to just become an Unaffiliated Voter, leaving my options open for the next Primary instead.

You and I are of a similar political bent. Contrary to some opinions about Obama’s position on Pakistan, I think it shows that he’s keeping it real and pointing out the place where the war on Terror really needs to be fought. It makes me like Obama more, not less. It’s likely that the next President will need to make some hard decisions about the fate of the military, and I think Obama can pull the trigger while at the same time implement some ‘Green’ energy independence policies.

from my admittedly scanty review of the post Iowa speeches, Obama was the only candidate who didn’t make a lot of I/me statements, he talked about we and us, not the red and the blue states, but the united states. Political cynic that I am, I was impressed with his speech, it may be a long shot, but a man really can be judged by the content of his heart. For the moment he’s got my vote.

It looks like after a lot of review and his success in Iowa I am leaning towards Obama. My wife is currently also leaning towards him, but she is still doing her homework.

With this juxtaposition, I thought you were saying Bill Richardson was wasted as Sec of State. I see you later clarified it to mean Bill Clinton.

Con-fusing.

I think Richardson would be a very solid VP candidate for either Obama or Hillary. He’s got great credentials and experience. He’s a solid moderate. He could actually do the job if he had to become POTUS. He’s from a southern state, he doesn’t have a lot of negatives and he wouldn’t overshadow the top of the ticket.

He’s not “sexy,” but if Barack gets the nom, that’s all the sexy the Dem ticket is going to need.

Oh, I like it, all right; that a leading candidate is talking about the (up to now one-sided, fought only by the overclass) class war in America is a good thing.

I was trying to illustrate that your own politics, as stated in the OP, are much more liberal than you seem ready to acknowledge. As for the trophy wife thing, tell it to Fred Thompson. At least Elizabeth K. has class – you could really see her as First Lady.

It seems like a lot of us are confused about Richardson, but he was born in California and is Governor of New Mexico. I don’t think he qualifies as a Southerner.

I guess you’re correct, but I have not move far enough to the left yet to find Edwards acceptable. Cut and Run is Cut and Run and he is the only major candidate advocating it. I have strong disagreements with him in other areas, especially how he made his fortune by further destroying the manufacturing sector in the US*.

Give me some time, I only decided to leave the Republican Party a few days ago and I won’t make it official until 50 days after February 5th. I decided, as long as I can’t vote in the Democratic Primary, I will still cast a primary vote for either McCain or Rudy. I will then send in the paperwork to become Unaffiliated. That allows me to decide on the fly for the next primary season.

I saw your edit, I hate Thompson, he is another good reason to leave the Republican party, I actually like him less than Huck.

Jim

  • See, I really haven’t moved that far to the left. I still think Personal Injury Lawyers are the scum of the earth. Almost as low as Dick Cheney.

New Mexico is a southern state. Check any map. It’s also a state that, all by itself, would have swung the 2000 election.

You use a different definition of Southern State than is typical then. New Mexico is generally considered a South Western or Western State. Southern States usually means something else to most people. Usually Dixie States. Texas is often not even considered with the South.

You sound a lot like my husband. He has chosen Obama and would settle for Hillary. He despises the Religious Right and I’m not sure anything will ever get him to vote Republican again.

I, too, choose Obama and would settle for Hillary, but I’m coming from a waaaay more liberal perspective than you two.

I think the Republican Party has finally lost us old-school moderate Republicans who try to fool ourselves it is still the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt and fiscal responsibility. The Neo-cons have proven worse than the worst old fashion Liberals for wasting money and the Theo-cons just scare the living hell out of us.

Huck’s popularity and Romney’s is upsetting and the two Republicans I thought might move the party back to the center have spent too much time appealing to and appease the Theo-cons and far-right.

I really thought up until a few months ago that Rudy would run as himself and win the nomination and beat Hillary and pull the Republican party back away from the Theo-Cons, instead he has either been lying a lot or proven to not be the man I thought he was.

McCain has spent 8 years slowly cozying up to the side of the party he made a strong stand against in 2000. It is depressing and it is time for me to face reality.

I am apparently not a Republican anymore after spending my whole life as one.

Jim

Edwards? I was talking about Kucinich. Who also favors “cut and run,” but so do you, based on the OP. (N.B.: There is no other form of “clean exit” from Iraq.)

There are a lot of reasons the U.S. manufacturing sector has eroded since the 1960s. Personal-injury litigation is pretty far down the list. :dubious:
