[This thread.](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=880712) To make it as short as I can, Scylla uses his “nuclear sneer” on and snaps at a bratty kid who was bugging him at Target, and puts the kid’s mother down with a snappy retort that I completely believe and don’t think at all that he came up with after the fact to make him look like an internet tough guy. I posted that I thought that was kind of shitty. He replied that he’s proud of being a shithead and it felt good. I said basically whatever, shithead. The whole thing is a story. A tale. An anecdote intended to entertain. That’s it. No doubt it started with a nugget of truth (whiny kid in store demanding something), and then was expanded in the imagination of the writer. (what did the kid want? “Lunchbox” is funnier. Let’s make it that), and then had some details thrown in (what would I have done if I had actually done something? I know, I will write an amusing description of my “sneer”). Finally, let’s come up with an amusing ending. Just enjoy the story for what it is; an attempt at an amusing anecdote. But no need to be critical of the author for something that happened only in his imagination. ---

Please. How hard is it to ignore a five-year-old? You don’t even have to look somewhere else - all you have to do is not look down. Just carry on with your business and erase them from your consciousness. And before you say, “But he’s shouting!” - it’s not your kid, so who cares? What, you can’t deal with a little noise? ---

Right, how hard would it be to leave the aisle as soon as you see trouble coming and get back to it later, or I’m sure an able-bodied adult should be able to outrun a child. Worst case scenario, go to customer service and say the kid is following you and crying and you can’t find his mother and let the staff deal with it. ---

Summary for those who haven’t read the linked story: Five year old is at the end of their rope, on the edge of a meltdown, fixates on something, and can’t regulate emotions. Mom is desperately trying to get weekly shopping done, staying in budget, while corralling two children b/c she doesn’t have access to childcare so she can get shopping done. Pitiful fucker is proud of himself for making the five-year-old melt down at Walmart. ---
