The Deep from the show _The Boys_ (a clear Aquaman/Namor homage) has gills under his rib cage on either side of his abs. It’s pretty gross and he’s very self-conscious of them. He’s not a mermaid but he’s a “human with gills” so counts for this discussion. I believe I’ve also seen a portrayal of mermaids (I can’t remember in which medium) that had gills around where their hips would be if they had a human lower body, or to put it another way they are on the sides at the top of the fish part. Which seems (relatively) sensible to me. ---
