"A shoebox full of fifties"

vibrotronica, when the expression is used, is fifties pronounced as if it were fitties? That sounds familiar to me and I am originally from West Tennessee.

speckfisher, you have made yourself so welcome here to me. My father used to own a grocery store in a small town. It has probably been half a century since I have heard the expression “quarter peck” or even thought about it. Was that a measure of weight? Part of a bushel? Wait! Song lyrics! a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck

Oh good grief! I’ve gone mad.[/hijack]

You can buy pecks of apples at the orchard near my childhood home… they’re a smaller basket than the bushels.

Just a complete stab in the dark, but doesn’t the fact that the money’s in a shoebox imply that it is also tax-free/untraceable?

Didn’t the guy who was convicted of the Linberg baby kidnapping have a couple of shoe boxes full of fifties?

Well, duh. Of course!

Yes. A total of $14,600 was found in a shoebox in Bruno Hauptmann’s garage.

I thought the paltry sum recovered from the Brinks job was found in shoeboxes, but it turns out to have been secreted away in a picnic cooler.
