So I’m gazing out my window up here on the 6th floor, contemplating the long weekend and watching the traffic go by, when my eyes alight upon the utility box across the road; you know, one of those gray metal things that houses the traffic light controls or whatever. In bright red paint, and in letters large enough for me to see even from my lofty perch, is scrawled: **“FUCK BUSH”**. My initial take on this was “Dang, I shoulda taken that spray can from the Ms. before dropping her off at work this morning.” My other suspicion was that it’s one of the other two Democrats in the state making his opinion public. But then I started wondering about other possible explanations: someone fed up with the fairer sex? Someone who hates shrubberies? Someone pissed off at the King of Beers, and who can’t spell worth a damn? It will remain a mystery, I fear. ---

One of my neighbors has a bumper sticker that makes me smile every time I park behind his car: “More Trees, Less Bush.” ---

This one actually has to do with Daddy Bush when he was running with Dan Quayle. A friend of a friend made up some stickers with a silhouette of a bush and a quail. They were promenently surrounded by one of those red circle-and-line “No” symbols. Gee, even Junior might be able to figure that one out. ---

It just occurred to me that the “fuck bush” message may be a family values message from a semi-literate and homophobic Pubbie. ---

There’s a city park in a town near here with a reputation as a gay trysting place, and some shrubbery are called the “fuck bushes.” This was true before Prince George’s move to Washington, D.C… 😛 ---

I still wish I’d ordered that “Lick Bush in '88” shirt from Rolling Stone. It was between that and the one about schools getting all the money they need and the military having to hold bake sales. OTOH, since that was eventually stolen, I probably wouldn’t have the “Lick Bush” one now, either. ---

There are two STOP signs in my neighborhood on which someone wrote “BUSH” so that they read “STOP BUSH” (not “BUSH STOP” for those of you that haven’t had enough coffee yet). Then someone else wrote “DON’T” at the top of one of the signs. As long as it doesn’t deteriorate into something violent, I find this bit of rivalry somewhat amusing. ---

Today I see where the city has come and painted over the offending graffiti. Some people have no appreciation of fine art. Last year someone near my house painted a half-sheet of plywood white and then painted on the words “ANWR NOW”, in support of opening the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling. In the middle of night, someone came by and painted out the ‘W’ on “NOW”, which I found amusing. ---

Back in 92 when Joan Jett Blakk was running for president on the Queer Nation ticket, one of the campaign slogans was “Lick Bush in 92!” When she ran again in 96 the slogan was “Lick Slick Willie in 96!” which somehow had less resonance.
