I found [this](http://www.geocities.com/FashionAvenue/6914/ABOUT_ME_PAGE_1.html) link on another page, and it’s freaked me out a bit more than anything I’ve encountered in a few days, which says something considering the kinds of sites I frequent. I’ve heard that some people have actually done this. Although I’m one of those ‘whatever turns ya on’ kind of guys, I think more should be done to stop this. At least make sure that none of my tax dollars go to them because of it. ---

Yes, it’s a bona fide fetish/lifestyle. The desire to be an amputee is called apotemnophilia. I’ve seen a few documentaries on it and the brilliant British magazine Bizarre has run a few interesting and fairly in-depth articles on it. It’s really quite widespread. Obviously, it’s controversial topic and the first rection is usually “Noooooooo way! That’s mentalist behaviour!” but a little research reveals that there are many perfectly rational people who hold these desires, for a wide variety of reasons. It’s hard to tell if this particular site is spoofing or not, but I do know there are people who are sexually gratified by cutting off a limb or limbs. Remember a while back we had some thread about felching that had a link to a dictionary of all kinds of weird sexual fetishes? The name for it was in there. All I can say about this girl is…weird, weird, weird! I wonder what kind of “accident” she is planning for herself? The whole idea gives me the creeps. And does her “fiancee” support this? ---

This topic was discussed a few months ago in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=51200) I have no doubt that this girl is deadly serious. What I can’t decide is which is more disturbing---- her before and “after” pics or what thoughts are going through her head as she makes preparations to cause her arms to be not merely amputated but done in such a way as to prevent the reattachment of same. 🤔 let’s see maybe I could chop 'em off. Now I’d have to get someone to help cause once I’ve chopped off one, I wouldn’t _be able_ to chop off the other 'cause I would only have one arm. Yess Only One More To Go. Who can I get to help and what would make them unable to be reattached–maybe I could get them eaten by rabid mongrels,…no that might hurt…crushing yes, if they are crushed… :shudder: ew, ew. ewwwwww. Whoa, does that woman own the “DORRANCE #5X STAINLESS STEEL HOOKS” manufacturing company or something? The name is repeated about a zillion times - it’s like some kind of warped advertisement. If not, I feel very sad for her. I hope she’s getting professional help. Has she considered how painful this “accident” is going to be? Is that what is drawing her to it in the first place? ---

missbunny, IANAP (psychologist/psychiatrist), but I’d go along the lines as a cry for attention. IMO, I think she’s noticed how much she herself has paid attention to ABE’s, and wants that same attention directed towards herself. So, the guy in the link provided by **moodtobestewed** believes that being an amputee will “enhance his masculinity.” Well. Not that amputees can’t be wildly masculine and good-looking; and even if I think something is weird, my opinion is that what consenting adults want to do amongst themselves is just fine; and I can understand how some people might get fetishistically turned on by persons who are amputees, but _to cut off your own limbs because you think it will be fun_ is, to put it extremely nicely, really really odd. I hope no one takes offense. This is only my opinion. You are free to think I’m a weirdo too. ---

Anybody here ever read _Geek Love_? Guy born limbless to carnival parents who are deliberatly cultivating kids for side shows becomes a sort of religious cult figure, has followers getting their limbs amputated bit by bit so they can be like him. I thought it was just a really dark, strange subplot for a book, until a friend of mine said, “No, there are really people like that.” I have to wonder if she’s _really_ considered the difference between having arms and not having them, assuming this particular site is for real. Like JuanitaTech said, she’s incriminating herself if she’s for real. If she’s _not_ for real, I could see finding this funny in a really, really dark way-- sort of like the kinds of jokes that will sometimes pop up in the “Things You Shouldn’t Laugh At” threads. Gotta admit, the constant mention of DORRANCE #5X STAINLESS STEEL HOOKS makes me think it’s a joke. It’s making me think of the “Boy Without a Body” pseudo-glurge (which, by the way, was briefly assumed to be real by a friend of mine-- what, the burlap sack for a body didn’t give it away?!). I’m sorry, but whatever your views on this particular person, this is a stupid thing to say. Amputees can’t look after their kids? The loss of a limb renders you less of a parent? Some amputees go _rock climbing_ FFS. Many lead full, active lives that include working, family and yes, sex.
