As I said upthread, Audacity is your friend. [You can also save in FLAC, which will even if you’ve loaded an MP3 won’t pork the sound quality any more]

Oh, the instrumental at the end of Lucky Man is the most gawdawful bit of stochastic synth noodling. Not long ago, I put the song into Audacity, sliced off the end, fading the synth out just as it was starting to ramp up, and faded East St Louis Toodle-oo (the Steely Dan version) in on top of it. Much easier to listen to that way.

_Nooooooooo_ kidding, and it’s for that exact same reason why I have an issue with the otherwise fine number “From the Beginning”, an album later.

I might get some push back on this, but there’s a part of _Ain’t No Sunshine_ that goes liked a little something like this. The song starts off great, but I don’t think I ever heard how the song ends, because I turn it off.

“Hey Jude” is the Song That Never Ends, and it drives me crazy because the rest of the song is so good. To make matters worse, Paul McCartney has decided lately that it’s his Signature Song, and he played about 20 minutes of it at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Bad enough hearing Man City fans squawking it every now and then.

Yeah yeah I realise HJ came out the same year MC won the Prem and is the usual reason stated why they sing it, but…but…oh…just…COME ON!

Missed edit window:

ETA - HJ trivia - George was pissed off that Paul wouldn’t let him put a soloing guitar track over the nananana’s, (which I think would have been an awesome idea - just little tasty Georgey licks, at the end of each measure, say), resulting in a Harrison song from the 70’s (can’t remember which one) where, to the tune of the nananana’s “hey-eh Jude” notes, he sang, “What a bloody shame”.

Ah, thank-you. And upon re-listening (been ages), I’m not sure if I heard _exactly_ as what I’d described in my previous post.

The last quarter or so of the Velvet Unferground’s “Heroin” has the big guitar screechy/squeal thing goin on that I’d like to take the big over-sized mallet to. While I dig it (, man) that that part’s supposed to be the big heroin rush, or something, I just wanna throw my lawnchair at it.

> My contribution: The Pretenders’ “Middle Of The Road” is an almost perfect rock song, and it’s one of my favorites, except for the four measures after the great guitar break. Obviously, the song’s lyrics weren’t quite finished at the time of the recording, and Chrissie Hynde only counts in the four beats instead as a placeholder. But that’s really the only weak part of an otherwise great song.

That album came out in 1984. Next year, Chrissie Hynde turns 70. The middle of the road has been in her rear view mirror now for a long time. Yes that song is great, thanks for that. I hadn’t heard it in a long time. It’s a great tune with strong lyrics, including…

_In the middle of the road you see the darndest things_
_Like fat guys driving 'round in jeeps through the city_
_Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits_
_Past corrugated tin shacks full up with kids_
_Oh, man I don’t mean a Hampstead nursery_
_When you own a big chunk of the bloody Third World_
_The babies just come with the scenery_

Love it.

I’ll contribute from 1976, from Boston’s debut album — Hitch A Ride. I love that song, but the instrumental interludes are just a little too long. Especially the first one which really isn’t all that long, but it’s just a filler that disappoints a little bit. And the last one that takes you to the end of the song, it’s pretty but it drags on for just a little too long.

Hitch A Ride: _freedom on my mind, carry me away for the last time…_

Love it.

Agreed.

Makes my skin crawl every time I hear that. It’s even worse when one of my friends ( admittedly a prog-rock fan compared to my own straight-ahead hard rock preference ) damn near swoons over that part.

Yes! So insipid and I never could get why the singer ( or writer ) never caught on to how to differentiate between emphasis and obvious filler.

In “Sweet Home Alabama”

> Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
> Well I heard ol’ Neil put her down

So I’m thinking the next part will be to the effect that if we ever catch him, we’re going to cut his balls off or something.

> Well I hope Neil Young will remember
> A southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Whoa, that’s harsh! 😏

Even since the SNL skit, I hear cowbell in a lot more 70’s and 80’s songs, and not for the better.

The Beach Boys “God Only Knows” - the start of the instrumental break is incongruous with the rest of the song. Sounds like a call to start a conga line in front of the bar.
