A summer visit to Toronto

Checking your suggestions against my memories, I think it was Yorkdale.

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions. We had a great time (and I had my first poutine on Canada Day!). We spent time at:

Royal Ontario Museum
Casa Loma castle
CN Tower
Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)
Ontario Science Center
Ontario Legislative Building
Queen’s Park
Toronto Botanical Garden

And we made good use of the TTC.

Glad you had a good time! I hope your heart survives the poutine cholesterol!

Yes, Yorkdale Mall has had a subway station for many years, and yes, it’s certainly still in business – in fact it’s one of the biggest in Canada and was once the largest indoor mall in the world.

Fairview now also has a subway station adjacent to Sears, associated with the new Sheppard subway, basically a short spur line with half a dozen or so stations whose main purpose is to shuttle east-enders to the main line at Yonge through what was once an exceptionally busy bus route.

Are you a loyal Protestant who is true to your British heritage? Of course you are. In that case, it’s too bad you didn’t stay a bit longer to catch the Toronto Orange Parade, the longest running parade in North America (196 years) - coming up on July 9!

Yeah, stick around for the racist, xenophobe parade.

Nothing the least bit racist or xenophobic about good old King Billy and the Glorious Revolution. Still annoyed about 1690? :stuck_out_tongue:

As a young child I lived in Northern Ireland for 3 years: so yeah.

I’m a protestant, by the way.[/hijack]

I am, but I’ll miss it. Rats! (Not really).

I guess Clifton Hill in Niagara is pretty meager fare compared to all of the above… but it IS fun.

Please Note Canadians are very polite, but never ever interrupt your tour guide.
For example if the tour guide says, “Ladies and gentlemen, coming up on your left is the Second Oldest RCMP Post in ALL of Canada!” it is considered rude to reply,

“…But Don’t Worry, Ladies and Gentlemen. They still run Plenty Fast…!

Q: What is the most impressive achievement of modern taxidermy?
A: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

My wife and I go to Edwards Gardens regularly. It’s a nice place to walk; there’s a fairly lengthy stretch of trail next to Wilket Creek. I assume the Science Centre was your primary destination in that part of town, though.

We had just missed each other. We were in Toronto the last couple days in June. My kids were shocked, shocked to discover that Canadian schools were not yet out for the summer.

We did
Fort York - We had just missed the Taste of Toronto.
I ran into the Hard Rock store (I’m That Guy with the Hard Rock shirts.)
Little India for dinner (My wife’s rule for the ethnic areas - follow your nose, and look for the locals)
Chinatown for the next night dinner
The ROM - The antiquities on the third floor were incredible.
Legoland - We had to do something for the younger guys, since we were planning on hitting several wineries on the drive to Niagara.

I want to go back and spend more time there, and see Casa Loma and the CN Tower (dubbed Mr. Spike by the nine year-old.)

Casa Loma was well worth a visit - huge, beautiful and very well-maintained. I was surprised how many movies (including X-Men, Cocktail and Chicago) have had scenes filmed there. The CN Tower view was awesome, but be prepared for a wait to get up there. We thought about Legoland but decided not to go (we’d already been to the one outside Chicago).

Yes, it was.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World was another.

Surely, they are Much more active than that…

Yes. And some others I vaguely knew of.
