_WIRED’s_ recap of where Friday’s filings takes us:

**The Mueller Investigation Nears the Worst Case Scenario**

>
> Sentencing documents for Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen drag President Trump harder into the legal spotlight.

> [@](#):
>
> WE ARE DEEP into the worst case scenarios. But as new sentencing memos for Trump associates Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen make all too clear, the only remaining question is how bad does the actual worst case scenario get?
>
> The potential innocent explanations for Donald Trump’s behavior over the last two years have been steadily stripped away, piece by piece. Special counsel Robert Mueller and investigative reporters have uncovered and assembled a picture of a presidential campaign and transition seemingly infected by unprecedented deceit and criminality, and in regular—almost obsequious—contact with America’s leading foreign adversary.
>
> …
>
> The lies by Trump’s team would have provided Russia immense possible leverage. Michael Cohen’s calls and efforts through the spring of 2016, as he sought help for the Trump Tower Moscow project, were publicly denied until last week.
>
> But the Russians knew Trump was lying.
>
> For years, Russia has known compromising material on the president’s business empire and his primary lawyer.
>
> Similarly, during the transition, Michael Flynn called to talk sanctions with Russia’s ambassadors—saying, in effect, don’t worry about Obama, be patient, we’ll undo it—and then covered up that conversation to federal investigators and the public.
>
> But the Russians knew Flynn was lying.
> …
>
> While Trump has tried to slough off the Trump Tower Moscow project since Cohen’s plea agreement as “very legal & very cool,” the easiest way to know that they don’t believe that themselves is that they lied about it. For years.
>
> “The fact that [Trump] was lying to the American people about doing business in Russia and that the Kremlin knew he was lying gave the Kremlin a hold over him,” the incoming chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler, told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. “One question we have now is, does the Kremlin still have a hold over him because of other lies that they know about?”
>
> …
>
> As Mueller put it in Friday’s Cohen court documents: “The defendant’s false statements obscured the fact that the Moscow Project was a lucrative business opportunity that sought, and likely required, the assistance of the Russian government. If the project was completed, the Company could have received hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources in licensing fees and other revenues. The fact that Cohen continued to work on the project and discuss it with Individual 1 [aka Donald Trump] well into the campaign was material to the ongoing congressional and SCO investigations, particularly because it occurred at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the U.S. presidential election. Similarly, it was material that Cohen, during the campaign, had a substantive telephone call about the project with an assistant to the press secretary for the President of Russia.”
>
> Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin phrased it slightly differently in the wake of Cohen’s plea agreement: “It would have been highly relevant to the public to learn that Trump was negotiating a business deal with Russia at the same time that he was proposing to change American policy toward that country.”
>
> …
>
> Put together all the clues, and Occam’s Razor comes to mind: The most obvious scenario is the most likely scenario. And the most likely scenario now is that there was no division between the apparent Trump-Russian collusion on business matters and in the election. The coincidences are piling up. The conversations are piling up.
>
> And Mueller’s evidence is clearly piling up as well.

TLDR: It now looks more and more like that Trump was eager to sell out America to make some money from Russia.

To which I say “Duh”. What’s it going to take for his “patriotic” base to realize their hero is Putin’s bitch and only out to line his own pockets (well, maybe not only, Trump probably doesn’t want to go to prison).

I think an interesting question that will come to be relevant is whether the SDNY will abide by the rules of the Executive Branch that the President is immune from prosecution, or if they’ll elect to ignore the norms.

I don’t think that Mueller will go against policy. He’ll just take out all of Trump’s family but leave Trump by himself to spin.

But the SDNY could do so.

True. I actually posted a link a few days ago to an article and video describing just that.

I think there are supporters who simply would not care no matter what came out. But I also think there’s a percentage of the base that is just ignorant of how bad Trump is. These people are, ahem, pretty obtuse and lack critical thinking skills which makes them susceptible to rightwing propaganda. They believe the pro-Trump/anti-liberal media fervently and have been conditioned by Trump and others to disregard any conflicting information as Fake News! Cognitive dissonance is high in these people, but they’re probably decent people in most other aspects of life.

If Trump’s crimes and collusion become so transparent and too much even for Fox News and Fox turns on Trump, these people are going to be seriously confused.

As long as he hates the same people they hate, and they still can believe that he’ll bring the hammer down on them, they’ll think he’s great.

What _might_ cause them to lose faith in him is if they eventually\* realize that they’re not any _better_ off, and all those blacks and browns and liberals aren’t any _worse_ off, and Trump’s not going to make either of those things happen.

\*Key word! I’m not expecting this to happen particularly soon.

> But something stood out to me as I watched the Trump crew mill around on stage as the election was called for them. Melania’s outfit looked like something you’d wear to be comfortable on the flight home to New York. The venue was practically anti-Trump: No tasteless gold or red, not enough cheap-looking glitz. Trump looked like a pole-axed cow. He clearly wasn’t expecting to win.
>
> In that moment, I had a notion that he was –\> \<– this close to saying, “Just kidding!! This was fun, but I’m stepping aside in favor of my new bestie, Mike Pence!!” I honestly would not have been surprised if that happened.

I half expected that to happen at the GOP convention, when he could have stepped aside on the first night, and let the assembled convention pick a new nominee.

But of course if I’d thought about it, his motivation for running had been the way Obama humorously sliced and diced him at that White House correspondents’ dinner. (I’m still in awe of Obama’s doing that _as the bin Laden raid was underway_.) Trump’s purpose in running was to one-up Obama, and anything less than winning would be coming up short.

However, calling your ex-Sec of State “dumb as a rock”-- that’s perfectly okay! In fact here’s a [list](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/01/28/upshot/donald-trump-twitter-insults.html)of insults that are perfectly okay, in case anyone is curious.

The hardcore Trumpsters who know what he is or those that identify with him because of bigotry?

Yes, they’re deplorable.

Initial supporters that were conned by Trump and his promises because they didn’t like/trust Hillary or “elite” coastal liberals and felt some economic desperation, not as much. Although, if they still have unquestioned support for Trump after more than two years of seeing him after the election, they’re much less sympathetic.

An anecdote. My mother grew up on a farm in the upper Plains. My cousins who are still there are one generation removed from farming directly. They are conservative and they knew Hillary didn’t reflect their values so anti-Hillary Trump was a gamble they were willing to take.

Naive in my view. To me, it was obvious Trump was a bullying, incompetent, unqualified narcissistic asshole with limited mental capacity. But they’re generally good people but some have faults like bigotry they don’t recognize (one cousin sincerely explained to me, being from the East Coast, that “our Indians are like your blacks out East”). I actually first became aware of Trump in the '80s because when I played high school football Trump owned the USFL New Jersey Generals with Herschel Walker (not owning an NFL team and being slighted by the owners probably fuels his national anthem and players kneeling rage. Trump is always the victimized outsider). I have never been impressed with him but never really cared enough to pay attention until he got the Republican nomination.

Now, some of my East Coast friends are virulently pro-Tump and anti-liberal to the point of self-unaware parody. Posting memes on Facebook every day about how evil libruls are and how great Trump is. After people were floating the “Oprah for President” balloon after her Oscar speech, one guy posted “I don’t mean to be racist, but didn’t we already have a black president? Let’s not make the same mistake twice.”

That’s a guy who loves Trump because of his bigotry, not because of any normal real-world governmental policy, which Trump can’t articulate anyway (well, excepting simplistically stated Trump policies like “build a wall!”, “lock her up”, repeal Obama care, travel ban Mooslims, immigrants are invading!). These are people who feel validated and vindicated by Trump. Those are the deplorables.
