In my business, we file by first name, in the way the list being discussed is formatted. Our client list contains a mix of individuals and companies. We do it by first letter because it’s less confusing. I might have a client entry that reads “Jackson Smith”. Unless I am personally familar with the entity, I don’t know if it’s a person named Jackson Smith or a company owned by Bob Jackson and Bill Smith. First letter works better for me. ---

Sorting can be a real pain with SQL as well. We manage addresses. Unit numbers are all over the place. 5A, 10R, G14, 205.5, AB. Since it’s alpha numeric, it must go in a string field, which doesn’t short worth shit (10 comes before 2) The best I have come up with is to split it into its individual number and alpha components, sort by number and then alpha and present it that way. Still doesn’t always work. ---
