Can someone explain to me how people get taught about Hitlers SA, how they got thrown under the bus and think: “Yes! I want to be a Brownshirt!” Those guys always, in every example you can find get the short end of the stick, in prison when their cause fails, worse it succeeds. How can they be such “fans” of that part of history and not know their role is to be the bagman? This fact should get more airtime: foot soldiers in a totalitarian revolution always get fucked. The boys that helped Hitler got betrayed at the first opportunity, the guys that helped Stalin didn’t grow old to enjoy the fruits of their works (such as they were), I guess Mao’s friends also didn’t play a lot with their grandchildren (my knowledge of the Chinese revolution is a bit scetchy), Is there any example of such people living a long and happy life? Should we go and find their history teachers and beat (figuratively) some sense in them? ---

I know of a counter-example, where a revolution succeeded and the street-level grunts found themselves in a niche representing continuing authority: the Basij in Iran. They are technically a paramilitary auxiliary formally supervised by and reporting up to the Revolutionary Guard (the word “basij” might be translated as something like “mobilized force”), and they can be, and have been, called up and deployed in organized fashion for internal control of order. In everyday practice, though, these guys are essentially pseudocivilian thugs who have been empowered to run around inside the country as more or less independent gangs, seeking out and stomping on any early signs of resistance to the regime. They occupy a place of power below the uniformed military but above the general citizenry; the buzz of their trademark motorcycles is recognized by every Iranian as the signal for their arrival, and the cue to keep your head down and hope they aren’t interested in you. I would say they represent the best case scenario for what these back-of-the-truck morons are hoping to achieve — their existence pays lip service to law and order, but in reality they simply bear official sanction to autonomously crack the heads of anyone they don’t like. I think in general your statement holds, but it’s not an absolute with zero exceptions. ---
