The US already has a system in place for public funding of healthcare, the trick is to gradually get more and more people into this plan. Step one would be to end the medicare/medicaid split. Make it all one program, and make entry requirements for new kids as easy as it… I think this addresses the worst of the “How do we get from here to there” problems. It takes a fairly long time, so no one feels like they’re being rushed into some untested waters, and it gives the companies time to gradually scale back their activities, or move into new areas of business, without sudden massive lay-offs.
