A VERY Strange Coincidence?

Eh, just several times a day for me.

Such as this one which happened just in the last hour.

I have a few song lists which I play on random shuffle, ones which I find inspirational or personally meaningful to me. I usually play one with 600 songs at home, and for the road about 200 (more uptempo typically).

I was at my workout, watching the telly there. One of my top faves is a Fields of the Nephilim cut, “Psychonaut”, which goes on at length about this Leviathan, which for me personally symbolizes my own personal power and such, among other things. I put a painting of Moby Dick for my custom art for this cut.

I am playing it for my workout (nonrandomly note), and, right at the end of the cut, when these lines play:

Pray for Leviathan, Leviathan
Pray for Leviathan, Leviathan
Pray for Leviathan, Leviathan
I pray for Leviathan, I hear them come

I see an ad for a new movie: In the Heart of the Sea. About the whaling ship Essex which was sunk by a huge bull sperm whale.

The kicker is that Psychonaut was also the last song to play at home before I left (random 600 song list).

And when I got back, the very next song to play, The Refo:mation’s “She Comes in Singing” [A Church side project] plays. With this stanza:

You got a face like Raphael
You got a heart like a blue whale
And your heart is not for sale

And, as I type up this message, get the Nightwish song “Slaying the Dreamer”, with:
*
I’m a priest for the poorest sacrifice
I’m but a raft in a sea of sorrow and greed
You bathed in my wine
Drank from my cup, mocked my rhyme
Your slit tongues licked my aching wounds*

The crew of the Essex spent several months stranded in their whaling boats.
This kind of thing happens to me multiple times a day.
Now, I know none of this will impress anybody here in the slightest, just telling them like I see them.

It means you’re going to be a daddy!

Now, if he had a zither with him…eeek!

Majik!!

well explain this

I sit at my computer the majority of the day researching genealogy, mostly my family lines and I will occasionally start speaking the words I am writing, the next second the word I say is repeated on the tv

For instance, I might be typing out he was married on May 20…when I say married, someone on the tv will say it almost immediately…this happens a lot.

also, I can think about someone and they will call shortly later but it doesn’t always work but i can bet they are thinking about me…our brains are highly underused and this thought wave happens without us realizing it!

For fuck’s sake, people.

OMG! I was just thinking about posting that link!!!

I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble Mr Fish.

I think of these types of coincidences partly as confirmation bias, but more as a variant of the “birthday problem,” or what mhendo describes in his post. For those who are not familiar with it, the birthday problem is something like how many people must there be in a room for there to be a probability of 50% or greater that two share a birthday. The answer is only 23. So while the chances of any one specific person to share a birthday with someone else is low in such a small group, the chances two people will share the same birthday is 50% with a group of 23, and 99.9% at something like 70 people. Similarly, with the hundreds or thousands of thoughts occuring to us intersecting with the hundreds or thousands of events happening to us, it is not unusual that some of these will align with some frequency. The chances of a specific thought aligning with a specific event might be highly unlikely, but with a large enough pool of thoughts and events, a few of them statistically will have to cross.

I’m sure there’s a better and clearer way of explaining it, but that’s how I interpret coincidences.

Bolding mine. You don’t actually expect us to believe this last part do you?

You know what would be a really unlikely coincidence? If the OP ever came back to his thread.

Yes I do.

I used to own a videotape of The Third Man. Now I read this OP. This is a damned scary coincidence. Damned scary.

Coincidence and the law of very large numbers.

I only thought of that because Sheldon Cooper mentioned it once on TBBT.

Well, here’s a similar one that just happened to me, to show how unremarkable it is. I was just typing up another post on the SD and listening to the Puzzler on NPR. In the thread, I was for some reason blanking on who sang “Jesse’s Girl.” The answer to the Puzzler, right exactly at the time I was racking my brain, was “Buffalo Springfield,” which reminded me, ah, yes, “Ricky Springfield.” Spooky? Nah.

Whoa…

You guys are way too skeptical. Try and explain what happened to me just last summer.

I was at one of those all-you-can-eat buffet and was ready to get dessert. I spotted these nice puddings floating on a thin layer of caramel sauce. There was my dessert right there. Unfortunately, I was unable to pick one as every time I merely touched them with my spoon, they would slip away. Clearly, they had decided that they were not going to be eaten by me. And guess what? As I was chasing and waltzing them around the plate, desperately trying to lift one and land it on the saucer I was carrying, this music started playing.

Point taken, thank you very much.
