ABC pulls Jimmy Kimmel show indefinitely because of comments about GOP response to Charlie Kirk death. (Kimmel will be back on air Tuesday 2025-09-23)

If Disney is smart and wants save a little of its dignity, they should just transfer the show to their Hulu platform, where the FCC can’t touch them on grounds of bias…at least for now.

This is as big of a bad here as the FCC and ABC responses:

Nexstar ABC affiliates pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off air indefinitely

I think that’s why ABC caved, more than what Carr said.

In the past, I suggested that the big city network owned stations were an achilles’ heel where they were vulnerable to Trump threats against licenses. But now I see that the fact of the medium sized local outlets being locally or regionally owned may be an even bigger mainstream media vulnerability. The networks will cave in to threats, by red state stations, to stop running their news shows unless they become sufficiently Trumpy.

I wonder why people like Kimmel and Stephen Colbert don’t just go online with their shows, and forego the reach of corporate overseers entirely?

What’s to stop them from producing the same show and just broadcasting it on YouTube? Do they really need a television network anymore?

Do you really think Google wouldn’t do the same to appease conservative America? Trump is the most powerful person is the world and not afraid to use it.

These corporations are threatened by the government with a non-cooperation when it comes to mergers and business and such. It’s just on a whim of those who ultimately control the possibility of the merger or business.
There isn’t even a fig leaf of a valid reason why.

Hulu has a monthly fee, so viewership would be much lower.

What about the viewers who will use over-the-air television?

A lot of people, like me, don’t do YouTube

But I’m sure Jimmy Kimmel will find ja place to land softly. If it is online, I’ll give it a try.

The problem that worries me is not the careers of these individuals, or their strongest fans being able to see the shows. The problem is that by 2028, even though you still will be able to find critical media if you look for it, those who have plain old TV will see far more pro-Trump content than anti-Trump. This is an early but important stage on the road to more comprehensive censorship. Suppressing a big chunk of critical media, or just making it harder to get to, will make it very hard for Democrats to win.

The piece of shit is gloating. This is coming from the White House account. And he specifically says that Jimmy Fallon and Seth Myers are next.

…that’s just the reality of living under fledgling authoritarian regimes. People and corporations have a lot less backbone than what most people think. And when they cave…there isn’t anything really we can do about it.

MSNBC is about to get taken over by the alt-right. TikTok is getting bought out by a billionaire. The Talk Show hosts are being shut down. More will cave. And we are probably already past the point of no return.

Colbert and Kimmel should collaborate on a show for PBS. I’d gladly give to my local PBS station regularly if that got off the ground.

Just underscoring your post. People don’t realize what a large effect small disincentives have over the long haul. Just make it slightly more difficult to access anti-authoritarian views, slightly more difficult to get an education, slightly more difficult to travel, and by 2028 (much less 2058) the culture will have shifted remarkably quickly.

I was one of the most pessimistic doomsayers about all of this, and even I didn’t think it would all happen this fast and without any fuss.

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but South Park is postponed this week.

The excuse being used is that they didn’t finish the episode on time, but right now it feels undetermined if the show will return.

I’m not a big fan of Kimmel but I’d subscribe to this channel.

He didn’t say anything to offend Republicans.

“What the fuck did I do?”

I totally experienced it, but then I’ve been reading a lot about the collapse of the Wiemar Republic and the rise of the Nazi regime. And, of course, a bit of Timothy Snyder:

Stranger

Not excusing ABC’s action in any way but Kimmel mocked MAGA saying Robinson was one of their own and they should own up to it. It now appears that is incorrect. But the MAGAts are adamant about blaming liberals for the killing of Kirk and were outraged at the suggestion it was anything else.

I don’t think you can say that. It seems quite clear that, if he’s 22 and Maga began 9 years ago, that a substantial portion of his formative years were MAGA, and he was one of their own, at least until recently. They should own up to that.

Also, as noted in another thread; there are, still, Gays and Trans who are republican.

Kimmel said MAGA pushed the idea the shooter was anything except MAGA. MAGA people immediately blamed the shooting on the left, before any motive could be possibly known. Trump did it within minutes of the shooting, as did Nancy Mace but she got called out in real time. Even now when it looks like the shooter was maybe MAGA, maybe a non-political loon, MAGA is blaming the left loudly.

Kimmel is being punished for accurate speech, by the crowd that claimed to be free speech absolutists.

If South Park capitulates, that’s it. Game over.

Kimmel’s words were so fucking mild he barely even addressed the issue. Kimmel seems like he was already pre-censored on the issue and this was his way of softballing it. They must’ve been desperately waiting for some pretext on which to fire him because this is an incredibly flimsy premise.

I’m so tired of people saying “we’re going down a dangerous path, if we keep this up…”

We’re already there. We’re already obviously there. A whole lot of people in the US are going to say “this is a dangerous step on the way to authoritarianism” as they’re forced into the gas chambers.
