Sounds to me like the local cops got a tip that you were cultivating, and made up an excuse to do some snooping around. If you want to make sure, call the Colorado Springs PD, and ask some pointed questions about the “reference.” Drop the name of your lawyer often. You may find that they have never heard of you. In that case, confront your local cops.
IANAL, but I think if you invite the cops in, and anything is in “plain sight,” then it would be a legal bust. That was established with, I believe, Mapp v Ohio.
I’ve thought about doing that. But I’m not sure I could even get the information. Everything I have is a little vague. And if the Colorado Spgs PD says they don’t know about the warrant, the local deputies could play dumb. “We got the call from dispatch to check it out (shrug)”. I think it could turn into a bunch of finger pointing and all I would accomplich is getting a bunch of people pissed off at me.
It’s always nice to have a lawyer friend. My lawyer is a great guy, I call him any time I have any legal concerns. If this were to happen to me, I would NOT have let the cops in, I would have given them my lawyer’s phone number, and then called him immediately after they left. Lawyers have a way of finding out what the “real” story is, I think by knowing people on the inside more than applying any pressure.
