Absinthe makes...

Hm. That would explain the name of the drink: Sazathotherac.

But as I said, this was the first time I had absinthe. Never heard of a sazerac, but that appears to be what they were.

…makes me ill and tired.

Nope. Just got drunk really quickly, until I learned how to drink it more responsibly, diluted with a generous amount of water (much like drinking a pastis.) It’s debatable that thujone, the chemical blamed for hallucinations in absinthe, is even a psychedlic drug at all. See here. Some sites I’ve read state that it may be, but at concentrations so high that you’d be dead of alcohol poisoning before you experienced the effects.

In my experience, it just seems to be myth and marketing, and most of the literature I’ve found supports that.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to New Orleans but, if you go again, pay attention to the cocktail menus. Sazerac is pretty much the city cocktail of New Orleans, at least at the more classy joints. ETA: And, supposedly, America’s First Cocktail.

I’ve been to New Orleans many times. It’s my favourite city.

But I avoid the classy places, and generally drink beer. Unless it’s cold, then I’ll have a toddy.

Too black licorice-y for my taste, but damn if it doesn’t pack a punch.

There’s some that aren’t as licoricey. There’s a Czech one called Hill’s that is pretty much devoid of licorice/anise and packs a punch at 140 proof. It’s also, in my not so humble opinion, one of the shittiest absinthes I’ve ever had, but it seems to be popular for those who want to drink “absinthe” and get shitfaced without the licorice flavor.

…the fart go Honda.

Thanks, but I’ll pass. My days of getting shitfaced just for the sake of getting shitfaced are pretty much way behind me.

Yeah, that’s pretty much the only point of Hill’s in my opinion. Or perhaps to just say you’ve had absinthe and mark it off the bucket list, but then you might as well get some decent stuff.

… makes the hard grow longer.

Maybe we should spin this off to the Game Room.

Tried it for the first time myself last week and that was just my reaction.
