# Academy Awards 2024 - 96th ceremony - Watch Along Thread

Wow, in four years we will have our 100th Academy Awards. I have less interest than normal this year in the show. I hope Miyazaki gets another Oscar, but I am otherwise mainly uninterested in the show this year. Still, I like to discuss the winners and losers and so here we are.
Something Fun. Here is Bob Hope’s monologue for the very first televised Oscar show. He makes numerous jabs about TV vs Movies. I actually have question for you to while we wait for the show. Can anyone explain his joke at about the 4 minute mark about new faces, old faces, etc.? I would have predicted a plastic surgery joke, but I’m not sure. Here it is:

I wonder if there will be any political moments. I don’t watch movies so I don’t know if the right choices have been made but its probably fun to watch.

I presume Oppenheimer has it locked up, but I would probably pick Poor Things of the choices.

He’s making fun of TV watchers for being out of touch with actual actors. The “new” actors he references have been already making movies for at least 10 years; but the other actors had been making movies for even longer.
ETA Actually I was surprised to see how far back Mary Pickford’s filmography went. But I still think that’s the general joke.

I did not see _The Holdovers_. Was Paul Giamatti’s performance worthy of winning the Oscar this year?
Can “I’m Just Ken” beat out “What Was I Made For” for best song? (Probably not)
Ryan Gosling should win for Barbie. I just rewatched it and that movie is no where close to being the same without him as Patriarchy Ken.

I think I still stand by my preferences in the Nominations thread. My personal Best Picture from last year was _Past Lives_. Beyond that, I wouldn’t be slashing my wrists if _Poor Things_, _Oppenheimer_, _Zone of Interest_(though, having the International Feature award sewed up, makes it a long shot), or _Barbie_ won. The others are all fine pictures, but not my idea of what a Best Picture should be for this year.
But I’m also realistic. I think _Oppenheimer_ most exemplifies what the Academy members want the world to take note of as the best of their industry. The buzz certainly bears this out.

Are they ever good? Seems a thing that needs to be written to appease all and offend none. Like elevator music. No one likes it (well, mostly no one).
