I really lost touch with rap in the '90’s after Public Enemy went downhill. I like hip hop, but rap just got into this incredibly materialistic rut that I just couldn’t relate to. There were occasional rap acts (like the Beastie Boys) or songs I liked, but nothing approaching the stuff from the '80’s. I figured it was because these guys couldn’t rap about anything except their money, and if that’s all you have to write songs about, I have no interest in you. I even liked the early gangsta artists, like Ice T and the Getto Boys, but the genre just wasn’t moving forward. Then I heard about Eminem, who was a pretty good rapper and was more than just a gangsta wannabe. So I listened to his stuff. I wasn’t offended by it, I wasn’t angered by it, my tender liberal sensibilities weren’t stepped on. I was just bored by it. And baffled by all of the acclaim, both critical and popular, he got.

Count me in on the anti- **Radiohead** bandwagon. I just never “got it”.
Then there’s **Coldplay**. I heard a good word on these guys before I ever heard anything by them, so I listened to dozens on songs trying to figure out what anyone saw in them. I eventually gave up on trying to figure that out. They do have one good song (“Clocks”), but I couldn’t get over how much it sounds like a cell phone commercial.

**Radiohead** - I liked “The Bends.” I can’t get into the rest. I don’t like Thom Yorke’s voice and the band seems ultrapretentious.
**Nirvana** - Sure they had a few good songs, but Kurt Cobain somehow made it “cool” to be depressed and whiney. Personally, I hate Kurt Cobain for this, along with for his killing himself. At least they launched Dave Grohl’s career though.
\*\*Pearl Jam \*\* - They were my favorite band for a while (up to and including Vitalogy) but they just got boring with/after Yield, although they do have a few good songs from their latter days. (ex: “Do the Evolution”)
\*\*Bob Dylan \*\* - Good songwriter, bad singer, mostly uninteresting or grating songs.
\*\*Robert Johnson \*\* - I don’t understand how this evolved into Rock, or why he’s considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

I don’t hate hate hate them. But I’ll also join the anti- **Dave Matthews Band** fray. I have to listen to him pretty much every day in my office (he’s the band on Pandora) and to me he’s just so damn booooooring.
Also he has the worst fans in the history of music.

I appreciate the C. Montgomery Burns reference, if no one else does. On another note, I give it less that two hours before the Beatle Police arrive expecting some sort of explanation for your out of step personal preferences. I love the Beatles and their music, bus accept that, music being personal and all, some may not.
Put me down for U2 and everything REM after Life’s Rich Pageant.

Joking aside, the **Zombies** are a great live band, still going after 50+ years! (with a bit of a break in the 70s & 80s, and maybe the 90s as well). I’ve seen them 3 times in the last five years and they put on a great show! I saw Colin Blunstone as part of a 60s package tour years before and thought his voice had about gone for the high notes, but he’s obviously been working on it since and still hits the notes when the songs call for it a couple of times per gig. And Rod Argent still likes flashy organ solos!
And, as mentioned by several others in old posts, I don’t really see why the likes of U2, Radiohead or REM gained such massive appeal…

I admit I haven’t listened to anything much after the late 80’s. I can’t tell a Radiohead from a Strokes from a Pearl Jam. It all sounds the same to me. But you go ahead, have at it. I’ll be here listening to U2 and a thousand oldies bands…
The Dave Matthews Band showed up here a couple years ago for a concert at the baseball stadium, and you would have thought by all the excitement it was The Pope hitting town. I thought, WTF? Who IS that? What’s all the excitement? It was puzzling.

**Jimmy Buffett** ’s voice is ten miles of bad road. And if you took his entire catalog, put it on tape, cut it up into 3" strips, tossed it all into the air and then taped it all randomly back together, you would have the exact same catalog.

With the Rolling Stones, I accept that on the scale of things, they’re pretty good, but I’ve never enjoyed their music. They always seemed to be put on the same level as the Beatles, who I think they’re far, far below. The same goes for Led Zeppelin, although I have very limited experience with their music and feel like I should try more of it before disliking them. I have this memory of playing Kashmir on the cello in an orchestra, and for about six or seven minutes, it was the same three measures again and again, grating into my consciousness. Kind of poisoned them for me.

Most of the 70s-80s bands mentioned in this thread I used to like but grew to hate.
The Grateful Dead I tried to like but never really got there.
Also, punk bands like The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, etc. Sort of wanted to like them but couldn’t. I liked the idea of punk, just not the actual listening part.

I almost fell asleep watching Widespread Panic at a music festival once.
