Accutane and the Naval Academy

“Frequently”, to my mind, means more than half the time. “Higher risk” may mean twice as likely, or three times as likely, but if the baseline of complications is 2%, then a complication rate of 6% is higher risk, but it’s not frequent.

Skin inflammation can have several different causes, even if the appearance is simillar. “Atopic dermatitis” may arise from contact with chemicals, or it may be a genuine allergic reaction. Psoriasis is a result of overgrowth of skin cells, as opposed to an attack on the skin cells by the immune system and requires different treatment than dermatitis/eczema.

I can see how you’d misread but for the love of all that is pure and good tell me that you can see how I’d have thought my response was adequately worded. I’ll be more careful next time.

Your second paragraph is a bit innacurate albeit regarding a topic ( :D-get it ) that generate much confusion.

Atopy is strictly allergic. It is a skin hypersensitivity disorder the same way that asthma is an airway hypersensitivity disorder. The broader group of itchy scaly skin disorders, eczema, include chemical irritation without altered immunity as a primary cause. Some confusion arises as folks with atopy are generally more susceptible to a variety of skin irritants than non-atopics. Nevertheless, altered immunity, is generally accepted to be the primary abnormality in atopic dermatitis.

Overgrowth of skin occurrs in psoriasis and 20 years ago, the overgrowth was felt to be the primary abnormality. A paradigm shift has occurred, however. The overgrowth is currently felt to be secondary to an abnormal immune response.

Your comment about atopic dermatitis and psoriasis requiring different treatments is not completely accurate. There is much overlap in the therapy of these diseases. Treatment modalities in common include topical steroids (generally higher potency in psoriasis), light therapy (UVB, PUVA-both inducers of cutaneous immunosupression), and systemic immunosuppressives in severe disease (both respond wonderfully to cyclosporine).

I asked around today…
The general hardline against severe acne is due to the difficulty in treating skin infections on a little metal island with limited supplies. This goes doubly for the submarine forces. Or not necessarily that it’s difficult, just that it requires valuable antibiotics and anti-inflamitories that could better be used in more life threatening cases… yet a staph infection can and will kill you if left untreated.

The Naval Academy, OTOH, most people seemed to think was a image concern. These are the people that end up being Press liasons and the like, they should be television presentable. Someone else made the point that NA students get tossed on ships and boats for a couple weeks and driven around for their moral edification… and severe acne might disqualify them from theise field trips for the same reasons as above.

Neither the Duty Corpsman nor the RadCon ELTs I talked to thought the radioactive contaminations aspect would feature very largely. Yeah, sure, some risk… but facial contamination is unlikely in general, and if you get sprayed in the face with radioactive water, lets remember that you have eyes, a mouth, nose, etc.

Hey, Mr. 666, I just noticed your Ballston Spa location – sounds like you are at Prototype. What plant?

There’s another problem that can arise with severe acne. One guy I know couldn’t serve in the army because his acne was so bad, especially on his back and shoulders, that he couldn’t wear a backpack.

I did the MO bit on S8G, but doing the ELT bit at MARF for various reasons.

MO and ELT at D1G a long long time ago. Is it true that the “Dig ball” is gone?

(a thousand pardons for this minor tangent)

Seems kind of odd to switch from one plant to another (S8G to MARF)…

I had EOOW training at D1G a long while back. I’ve heard that D1G was being taken apart once core end-of-life was finally reached, but don’t know if it included the ball. Can you fill us in, 1010011010?

The ball is still there, but it’s just an empty shell for the most part.

An extended shutdown at S8G sent me to go over to MARF for ELT quals.

Gotcha. Thanks!

Cool! The imagination reels: All they would need to do is smooth out the transition from the floor to the wall (IIRC, the wall met the floor at 45 degrees), and then it would be an absolutely bitchin’ skate park! Imagine racing motorcycles inside the ball; though, I guess the “for the most part” qualifier might cause some problems.

I don’t remember the actual dimensions, but it was HUGE. I recall how spooky it felt the first time I passed through the airlock and looked up and up and up… Not many other places where you can find a hollow ball of that size.
