But is there any commitment to be completely honest about personal details? I imagine that some people may fabricate the kind of exact personal details that might identify them, especially when the details aren’t relevant. I’d prefer to know who I’m talking to, but ultimately it’s the merits of what people post that matters. I think I’d find this problematic - and maybe warnable - only if it were directly related to the substance what someone was posting. If they were misrepresenting themselves as experienced parents in a thread about serious parenting issues, say. I’m not sure a thread about beanies rises to that level. The nature of the internet means that half of us are really dogs, bots or Russian infiltrators, right? ---

I was disputing his having a deceased son. He would not disavow a son if he was dead. He may say something like"My deceased son blah, blah, blah…". But he wouldn’t say he didn’t have a son. ---

Also, this type of lie would not be very useful in hiding identity–it’s not like finding out he really has a son would help us find him in real life. It’s an inconsequential detail, and when someone lies when it’s not important, I worry of having a compulsive liar. And, yes, I know I’m coming up with reasons that he could use if he were actually a troll. I just don’t really care if that is the extent of his trolling. Though, if he copies any of my reasons, I will be more suspicious of him. ---

I think Ace is extremely annoying - in fact, he’s one of only two posters here who I find sufficiently annoying that I can even name them off the top of my head, and the other one has an extremely similar style. With that being said, I don’t think he has some kind of cloak and dagger con game going on regarding information about his personal life. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy to play mind games. He’s just dense. ---

This thread has plenty of ridicule for his clueless old man schtick, which can distract from shit he says which is actively harmful. His overt sexism – leering at women, wondering why he can’t talk about the big hooters on his friends’ teenage daughters, and just yesterday arguing that sexist behavior was wiped out 40 years ago and there’s nothing more needed – is hurtful to real people and makes the board a worse place. So yeah, the worst things said about him do actually matter. Comments on his clueless postings are more common because it’s more fun to post about the funny stuff than the ugly stuff. ---
