From what I gather, Gillian suffers from an anxiety disorder, and dislikes the Hollywood scene, making it harder for her to do the necessary schmoozing.
She’s doing theater and BBC dramas in England right now.

Ryan, who played Susan in 2003’s sleeper hit Open Water hasn’t worked since! Wth? Thought she was great.
The Blair Witch Project’s cast has worked more. There is no Og.
OK, I know that you misspelled Willem Dafoe, but I’m not so sure about Kirsten Dunce.
IIRC, Julia Ormond took time off to do the baby thing.
Was Christian Slater ever able to cease his bad Jack Nicholson shtick?
The careers of most promising actors and actresses stall. There just aren’t enough roles for older actors and, particularly, actresses to go around. The surprising thing is when an actor or actress, through talent, connections, luck, or whatever, is able to sustain a long career of good leading and supporting roles.
Even though it was older than Saw, Elwes still had the good look in Shadow of the Vampire.
Jan Smithers of course eventually split up with Brolin (I heard he married some other celebrity, some B-list person) and she moved to Canada, got married, and is happily out of the limelight.
Mark Hamil fell out of the big screen after his auto accident left him pretty badly scarred up. They worked it into the plot for Return of the Jedi, but he hasn’t done much film since then. On the other hand, his credits include a LOT of voicework for cartoons and video games over the years. He may not be A-list, but he’s not starving either.
In my dreams, she’s married to me.
Oh, and still in her 20’s.
How about Alfre Woodard?
She seems very talented and usually likable, and she has those amazing eyes. But lok at her filmography. Why isn’t she a major presence?

I’d forgotten Cary Elwes. Even before Princess Bride, he was Robert Dudley in Lady Jane (I remember because, although I liked his performance, I can’t imagine the real Dudley being like that. I’d written a play about him that had a diametrically different character – but my beef’s with the screenwriter, not with Elwes, who was excellent). After Robin Hood: Men in Tights he seemed to keep getting secobndary roles and mostly villain parts (which require a good actor, but are often pretty thankless) in things like Twister and Jungle Book and Dracula. I haven’t seen Saw yet, but I’d like to. And I wish Elwes would get better parts.

[Hijack]I watched “History at the Movies” or whatever on History Channel once when Lady Jane was the feature and they agreed with your view. The real Dudley, the historian said, was a whiny little airheaded brat who was very vocally more than willing to cut a deal that would see his wife beheaded and him free, and when he was sentenced to death he didn’t die bravely but kicking and screaming and pleading for his life. None of this in any way diminishes Elwes’ brief but memorable nude scene in the movie, however.[/Hijack]
I seem to remember hearing or reading that Cary Elwes has a bit of a Val Kilmer-like attitude. As in, being very difficult and hard to work with and having an ego the size of Texas.
Or am I thinking of someone else, or just confusing him with Kilmer?
… Gabrielle Anwar should fire her agent…
I couldn’t say for sure, but in regard to this sort of thing, one must keep in mind that producers and directors will continue to work with “temperamental” types with ocean liners full of 'tude… as long as it continues to seem as though their name pulls in the bucks atthe box office.
Certain actors reach a status where you, as a potential audience member, trust their talent and their judgement enough that simply seeing their name on the marquee tells you that it’s OK to shell out the cash because chances are quite high that it will be a quality evening’s entertainment. You have your name on too much crap, you become “box office poison”, a sure sign that a movie sucks.
This is why I don’t complain about star salaries (or sports ficure salaries, for that matter). If the producers are counting on the actor’s talent for a certain amount of the ticket sales, then why shouldn’t the actor get a sizeable cut of it?
I don’t recall hearing a heck of a lot about the difficulty of working with Val Kilmer during the blockbuster release of “Batman Forever”. It was only after his next string of films all tanked that we got to hear about what a prima donna he is. After awhile, an assessment is made comparing how much money you’ll pull in relative to what a pain in the ass you are.
My impression is that if you have consistently good taste in scripts and a powerful agent who can get you parts, you can get away with being a complete prick for quite awhile.
Maybe you mistyped, but Rhys-Davis career hardly fizzled. Prior to Sliders he had two Indiana Jones movies and he recently had The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Granted, most of his other work was pure shyte, but he’s seemingly always employed and seems to land big roles now and then.
O’Connell should trip and fall off the Earth. That would be true addition by subtraction.
Personally, I didn’t think too much of the rest of the cast (but I only watched the first two seasons). Derricks I’ve seen many times in bit parts; Sliders is the only recurring, semi-lead role I remember for him. The others are forgetable, one-series stars. Hollywood restaurants are littered with them waiting tables.
Actually, while no longer acting very much, Carrie Fischer has found success as a screenwriter and script re-writer.
Some other ‘b-list person’ like, say, Barbra Streisand. Face it…he traded up.
Elwes also had a great mustache-twirling villian bit in Ella Enchanted. That was a surprisingly entertaining movie, you know.
I think I recall that Mark Hamill originated ‘Amadeus’ on broadway, too.
Heck, they should both be considered successful simply because they’re continually working. That’s a true accomplishment for an actor.
Traded up? From Jan Smithers?
Not logically possible.
And still no mention of the Two Coreys…
He made headlines today by falling off a roof.
