Actors you hate because of their personal lives

Miley Cyrus, because she’s such an ugly repulsive gnome.

GuyS that played Eddie. In later seasons the original got too old and was replaced by his own son. But rumor has it they were both really sons of bitches.

Sometimes knowing about an actor will sour me on their work, more often than knowing about their real lives makes me more interested in their work. But I couldn’t give you a consistent standard I apply mentally. I won’t recuse myself from every watching Cosby less rarely I watch him now, but on the other hand I find that his routine on the Spanish Fly, in which he more-or-less admits to having a fetish for drugging and raping women, is must-listen for any discussion of the subject. The thing about that bit that I think poisons some of his other work is the cutesy noise he makes, which he’s made on other occasions I can’t name off the top of my head, but which in this routine is used as the sound of a drugged woman being raped. A national treasure, this guy.

I did sour on Chelsea Lately pretty quickly when I saw her all chummy with James Van Praagh. Apparently they hang out together. To hell with her. Similarly, I hold a grudge against Jay Leno for giving Uri Gellar a triumphant return to the Tonight Show after the legendary drubbing he got from Carson and James Randi. The shit had the nerve to suggest that skeptics be open minded. Hey, Chinballs, Gellar and his ilk take advantage of vulnerable people. Why don’t you try opening your heart. Fuck Jay Leno. The man is a pig.

Lord knows I’m not out to defend Cosby’s behavior with women, but I think you may have somewhat misinterpreted this routine. “Spanish fly” is a substance traditionally (and falsely) supposed to be an aphrodisiac, not a narcotic or similar “date rape” drug. The passionate growling that Cosby’s imagining is the sound not of a “drugged woman being raped” but of a horny woman jumping a guy’s bones.

Now, I’m not saying that a drug that makes you horny (if such a thing existed) without your consent is really less ethically dubious than a drug that knocks you out without your consent. But I think a case could be made that a horny conscious woman being sexually aggressive is less horrifying than an unconscious drugged woman being raped.

Also (and I too am not defending Cosby’s behavior) the whole “Spanish fly” thing was a fantasy commonly spread amongst adolescent boys. It’s the recognition of how ridiculous some of the urban legends of puberty were - and our reactions to them - that makes the bit work. In this case, it’s funny because it’s *not *true but some of us thought it might be when we were too naive and hormonal to know better.

Because he was all about shows that promoted family values, and then dumped his wife and mother of his children for a woman half his age.

And a racist. I can’t say I don’t see his stuff because of it though. I never watched him anyway.

As for my own submissions, most have mine have been covered… Cosby, Gibson, Allen, Cruise (not for being a Scientologist, but because of his loud-mouthed views against psychotherapy that are so damning) and John Phillips. But to add to that is the director of Jeepers Creepers, Victor Salva for molesting under aged boys. I also wouldn’t read George R.R. Martin or Piers Anthony if my life depended on it.

Gwyneth Paltrow.

Out of curiosity, what aspects of Martin’s personal life do you have dislike?

I myself don’t know about his personal life, but some descriptions of events in his Wild Cards books has put me off of ever getting into his books. Specifically, he had a villain who stole other people’s super powers by anally raping them. I don’t know that I want to read what else this guy has been jizzing into a keyboard.

While I’m not questioning your taste, this is kind of orthogonal to the phenomenon that the OP is asking about.

If you’re put off by disgust at events in Martin’s fiction rather than in his real-life existence, that’s fine, but it’s a whole other topic. Unless you’re suggesting, e.g., that Martin couldn’t possibly treat anal rape this way in his fiction unless he were willing to condone it in reality, which may possibly be true but is definitely pure speculation.

I think our society is pretty comfortable with the idea that you can meet someone else and get divorced and remarried without necessarily being a person without family values. Unless, that is, his shows explicitly advocated the opposite. I haven’t watched them, so I wouldn’t know.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying the guy sounds skeevy to me. It’s a bit afield of the flawed actor part of the OP, but that ship has kind of sailed anyway. But that a guy whose writing makes you feel like he’s a skeev in real life sort of counts as a personal life affecting your perception of his work.

You do realize that series was an anthology and Martin didn’t write most of the stories in it?

Huh! I read a description of a book on Amazon, of some fantasy writer who wrote a story with his hero CUTTING OPEN A VICTIM he took as a prisoner and raping the victim through the wound! Let’s move along now, I thought, nothing to see here…

If you Google Lindsay Lohan she has had a wealthy Russian boyfriend (heir in a very wealthy family) for some time now. She was also hosted/taken along for private overseas trips by very wealthy Arabs several times in her past. Whatever they worked is between them.

You obviously have never read the books in question yourself based upon that statement, so basically, you’re letting other people decide for you.

If anyone was wondering…
the bad guy didn’t steal super powers via anal sex, he granted a super power by it, and while some rape may have occurred (he is, after all, a bad guy) the one scene where the reader gets the full and explicit story all participants were willing, even if some were a bit squicked.

Also, a LOT of writers collaborated on that series, I’m not even sure if GRRM was the one to come up with that character or if it was someone else.
Some. Voiceovers seem more common, but I have a feeling US actors do more commercial work overseas from what I’ve seen out of Japan.

Dammit. Not Martin, but Orson Scott Card. For being a raging homophobe. How I got the two mixed up, I’ll never know. My apologies to everyone and George.

Well, no I don’t actually. But I’ve been judging him based on what I was told was his writing. Are you telling me that Martin was not in fact the author of the super ass-rape stories?

The contents of a book were described to me, and I took those contents to speak poorly of its author. The term “letting other people decide” refers to a different kind of mental exercise unless you believe no one has agency to interpret information who has not personally experienced the gathering of the relevant data.

And this is not even dealing with what I’ve heard about the appalling misogyny in Martin’s Game of Thrones series. Or must I actually read every depressing rapetastic female character arc from passive victim to murderous psycho-bitch before I can dare be disgusted with an author. If you have a correction to make to my impression, make it. Accusing me of not having a mind of my own does not lend authority to your defense of Martin.
