Rick with a p Perry, Gov of the great state of Texas, was discussing a death penalty case and didn’t know he was close to an open mic and had his sentiment toward the condemned recorded, it was “Adios! MoFo.” He’s going for the Presidency again, how can he lose? But what I want to say, really, is “Adios Kingsford charcoal you really suck.” Kingsford started when Henry Ford didn’t want to waste wood leftover from his assembly lines so he turned it into hardwood charcoal, made some money, and gave us a great product that has declined over time, badly in the early 90’s when they even quit stamping the K on it for a time, sadly now, after 45 years of grilling, it’s so bad I can no longer use it, or any other bag charcoal. I think all it is now is the crap the Chinese sweep out of the holds of freighters that deliver the Australian coal they import in such great quantities that burning it is destroying the Australian climate, coal dust and crumbs glued together with the sweat of peons laboring over Iphones and it doesn’t hold it’s heat and smells like a smudge pot and in the future I’ll just build a fire pit and burn oak logs and shovel up the damn hot coals into my smoker and get back to some tasty grill meat! ---

I’m having a difficult time trying to follow the logic of your thread. What does Rick Perry have to do with charcoal? In any case I like Kingsford just fine for a steady controlled burn. I like lump charcoal for high heat cooking and I like hard woods like pecan, hickory, apple, and cherry for smoking. ---

I think Kingsford Charcoal was the real killer and they executed an innocent guy by grilling him with some knock-off Chinese charcoal. ---

-10 points for the stream of consciousness posting style, but +5 for the bit of trivia–Kingsford charcoal [did in fact](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsford_(charcoal)) get its start using Ford’s scrap wood. Oddly, the “ford” in Kingsford appears to have nothing to do with Ford. ---

MILES better than the cheap-o stuff. I like the Kingsford “Competition” briquets from Costco. Seems like they burn a bit hotter and more evenly. And, since they’re at Costco, they’re cheap as hell. ---

I like the Trader Joe’s charcoal slightly better than Kingsford, but this weekend (Memorial Day), I will stock up on sale-priced Kingsford. I’ll only switch back to TJ’s should I run out. I’m thinking of buying some better lump charcoal (the one brand I previously got was crap) just to try it out and compare. Anyone try the Kingsford Hickory? Any good? Would it oversmoke meats in a smoker? As for the OP, I had to reach for the Tylenol about 3 sentences in. He must’ve had the good stuff from down Mexico way. ---
