Hopefully double posting is okay. I didn’t see anything in the FAQ about it . . .
But I brought my dog home. She is SUCH a good dog. Good on a leash, good in a car, loves cuddles, and such a good baby all around. She hasn’t been itching her stomach at all so I’m not sure I should put her cone of shame on. I’d feel terrible if something happened but I also don’t want her to be uncomfortable for a week. Hmm.
She has a huge scar on her side that you can barely really see in one of the photos. So sad she had a wound like that. No idea what it’s from.
OK, one last thing. Any ideas on breed? She looks like a Generic American Muttdog to me. I can’t really determine anything. Her body looks a bit APBT-y. Her face looks a bit lab-y. But I can’t be certain.
Thanks! Her name is something really silly from the shelter. (It’s still on Petfinder so I don’t want to say exactly.) I’m definitely going to change it, but not sure what to. Yet.
And yeah, the first thing she did was hop on the sofa. My landlord admitted he got it from Goodwill for $15 so I’m not terribly concerned about it.
Our one dog was named Thelma at the shelter. We preferred Ella, and she caught on immediately.
She is a cutie. Looks and brains, though? That’s the question. (Private joke about a friend’s incrediably beautiful show quality Afghan Hound that is as dumb as a stump)
I would call her a lab mix. Depending on your landlord/living situation/etc., you might save yourself some grief if you stay away from the suggestion that she might have pit in her. In reality, she might. Given how many unaltered pits there are out there, she probably has at least a bit in there somewhere. And while you, being a reasonable person, have no problem with that (nor should you), some landlords/municipalities/HOAs/insurance companies do. If you want to let her own who she (possibly) is and represent for pittie mixes, go for it- just know that some people have bad reactions to the P-word.
^ super good call. When you take her to your vet (not the shelter vet), ask if you can have her records reflect “Lab mix”, and put the same on your city license.
If you’d like, I’d be happy to send you some of the handouts I give to clients with new dogs! Also check out Pat McConnell’s “Love at Any Age”, it’s a short and inexpensive booklet about adopting adult dogs and it’s really good.
You should hear some of the very silly names the dogs at my shelter are named. We have a white boxer called “Jar Jar” and a fawn colored pit bull mix named “Elle McPherson”. Your pup will adjust to her new name in no time.
Thanks, that would be nice. I’ll check out the booklet.
And yeah, I plan to just call her a lab mix. That’s what the shelter put also.
No need to shoot myself in the foot if I’m not even sure about the pit part.
Local shelter uses Lab mix or Terrier mix most of the time for dogs that look mostly PB. I wondered why. Now I know.
Haven’t checked the pics yet, Neem but I’m sure she’s a cutie.
I had I think 7 female dogs, all spayed, and not one needed the Cone of Shame. I may have spritzed their tummies with bitter apple once or twice, but that was it.
It looks like I don’t even have the option of the cone since they gave me the wrong size. Wait, what?
Yes, I called the clinic after hours and they said they ran out of her size e-collar so they just gave me a smaller one. ~_~ How exactly is that supposed to work? It’s much smaller in diameter than her regular collar which is just the right size so clearly it’s not going to fit.
Hopefully she’ll be okay. Your post is encouraging, Whatever4.
Thanks AnaMen. Hope your pets are doing well if you have them.
ZipperJJ - What a cute pup. I wouldn’t have guessed she is 50% pit!
