Short stories, humor, serious novel, junk novel…whatever. Read aloud to him, then rest your voice periodically. (Listen to music, or even silence.) Also, start the trip with an agreement that there might be some road-trip stressors, but talking about stressors instead of obsessing about them will be beneficial to peace of mind for the trip, and to the relationship as a whole. Take a little pillow, and a blankie, and if all else fails, nap. ---

For truly long road trips, like my spring break trip to Florida (23-25 hours, depending on traffic around Atlanta), make sure it’s possible to sleep in the vehicle. I was dead tired when we got there and when we got back, because I couldn’t really sleep in the van. For shorter trips, I think it’s most important that all parties agree on stopping frequency. If you have to pee every hour and he only wants to stop for gas, there’s a lot of friction. I’d reccomend a rousing game of non sequitur or some other car game if you get really bored and must talk. ---

Oh, yea, make sure you agree on the bathroom thing. Me personally, I stop at every rest area, gas station, and outhouse between me and my destination. Usually because I’m guzzling caffiene like crazy, then I stop to pee, then I buy more caffiene. But I know some guys who get into the whole “We must not stop or my penis will fall off!” thing. ---
