I wasn’t surprised when I saw it was Aetna.
Their insurance policies are terrifying, at least at the level I’ve seen them. I’m sure that at the $500/month level the nurses will bring you tea and dumplings, but I was paying approximately $100 monthly for some quite reasonable copays and prescription costs, and that was more or less it. They didn’t cover most lab work. They didn’t cover much when it came to ‘preventive care’. When it came to actually seriously medically necessary ‘she’s going to die immediately if we don’t do this surgery’, they covered $5,000. No, I’m not missing any zeroes. After $5,000 you were on your own. They covered a scant $2,000 of ‘let’s see why she’s screaming’ investigation.
Incidentally, two large kidney stones, one in each kidney, was not considered life threatening. I was not actually IN kidney failure, was I? Hmmm?
This was at least preferable to their ‘Pray you don’t get sick’ plan I was offered when I considered temping for Dell. Five doctor’s visits per year – more aren’t covered. Don’t get pregnant, either.
I realize a lot of this is to prevent frivolous people from racking up $150+ every time they went to Dr. Friendly with the sniffles and even more of it is to indicate that perhaps that bump on Timmy’s head does not necessitate renting out an entire surgical suite to check for a concussion. That’s probably the justification for this, too, and it may be, well, justified. I just know how much debt I have.
