I’m trying to learn how others have successfully opened an AFC home for those with developmental disabilities. I worked with this population 16 years ago and enjoyed it very much. Now, with the kids in high school, I’d like to open an AFC home. I understand the state’s DHS site has guidelines and such. I’m more interested in learning the practical aspects of this endeavor. My main concerns include:

- Determining need (if we build it, will they come?)
- Financing a $200K+ home before having any residents.
- Now that I mention residents, how does one find them?
- Easier to start from scratch or purchase existing home?
- Where do folks market existing homes for sale?

Anyone on the board have experience or resources they could share?

Thanks for reading.

AFC = adult foster care

For those who don’t feel like googling.
