I don’t know if there is much value in trying to make that distinction. People are getting all worked up and calling for a mass slaughter of a people and these would be avengers of women rights are exhibiting breathtaking ignorance of the people they want to kill. Seems racist to me, but if it’s culturist, I don’t see much of a difference. They want to kill the others, without really understanding who the others are.
The facts are that the US armed and trained the people who became the leaders of the taliban and al Qaeda. The US also engaged in a program to create a school curriculum that would turn a generation of Afghans into fundamentalist killers. Then the US just wandered off and left the country to stew in this cocktail of misery. Then we all stand around on 9/12 and ask “why do they hate us.”
Now, we want the US to just wander off again, but first slaughter a bunch of them on the way out the door. Then presumably we can all stand around and ask why the hate us the next time around.
Racist, culturist, potato, potahto. Many Afghans have an excuse for being ignorant of the outside world and for not being exposed to new ideas; they live in stone age conditions. What the fuck is the excuse of some of the people posting in this thread?

A recent leader of my country had the irrational idea that, by military force and monetary influence, he could get people of other cultures to behave like the ideals of his own religion. He believed this in spite of the documented fact that most people in his own country did not behave that way. His mistaken belief led to big fat failures in our foreign policy.

If a doper posted here that red state America was backwards and intolerant; and that they deserved to be nuked, a lot of the same people here who thirst for the blood of the Afghans would respond the way I have in this thread. The reason is, they would see red state Americans as human beings and that the issues related to their supposed backwardness and intolerance are complex and nuanced. When you don’t see the humanity in another culture/people it is bigotry, plain and simple.

People only have understanding for things in which they are part. If there is no chance poster X could be involved in a certain behavior then that behavior is totally unacceptable and no punishment is enough. Illegal aliens? They are the scum of the earth and no punishment is enough. Because poster X is not an illegal alien and has no need to be one. But suppose a month later he falls in love with a person who happens to be one of those undesirables. Now the point of view changes and generates a lot more understanding.
Speeding on the highway? That should not even be illegal because we all do it. Whatever we do is OK. It is whatever others do which is bad beyond comprehension.
Americans as a people do not feel any need to try to understand other cultures and they are baffled when other cultures do not understand some things about American culture which, lets face it, seems pretty barbaric in some aspects when seen from the outside.
The New York times has a recent article about how women are being systematically abused in one way or another around the world including Israel. Religion is no fried to women, I am really getting sick of this crap.

People love to get on their high horses and pontificate how the world should behave (as americans, of course!). They will express outrage at injustice which happens in other lands without caring that there is great injustice also in their own country. They will express the notion that something, anything, has to be done to stop the barbarity.
But propose that America open its doors and grant asylum to large numbers of these oppressed people. Oh, no! You mean they would be taking our jobs? No way! Hey, if their country is such a shit hole it’s not my fault. Yes, life isn’t fair. Don’t ask me for my money in solving other people’s problems. I’ve got enough problems of my own what with paying for the two cars and the mortgage.
I see their humanity. Humans can be stupid. Some human behaviour needs to be eliminated because it causes more harm than good. If this means eliminating the humans who practice it, take them out as cleanly as possible.

Every time there’s a thread about feminism or women’s rights in the 21st century a dozen Dopers will explain that ladies have it just fine (assuming they’re in America which has no immigrants, women who travel outside its borders, no leftover sexist laws or p.o.v.s and perfect equality in every way as long as broads got a sense of humor).
