Yes, these annoy me also.

I think that is exactly what they are getting at here - the whole “we may need them someday…” perhaps is an old-ism. If the message from the commercial is hitting close to home, well, then…

DIL needed new cupboards in her kitchen. She said “I don’t have room for anything.”

They just stored dishes in the dishwasher. When she remembered to turn it on they didn’t eat out of paper plates.

I volunteered to organize her cupboards.

I threw away no less than 500 empty butter, yogurt and cottage cheese containers. No lids that worked on much. If you could find it.

When I got back from the dump she had plenty of room in her cupboards.

My first thought was “Those margarine containers should have missing or broken or slightly-too-small lids.”

Yeah… 30 years ago.

It’s so funny to me that people my age get offended by the “parent-isms”. Folks, I think we’re too close to the trope to see the humor…

I went on a WestPac in 1984 (six-month cruise of the western Pacific). When I returned, our cupboards were stuffed with plastic plates from all the Lean Cuisine meals **kaylasmom** had eaten.

The purveyors of food pills invented for the market niche of “won’t-eat-my-veggies toddlers in adult bodies” found a way to be even _more_ annoying?

There’s the McDonald’s commercial where the dude is indecisive in the Drive-thru. I suppose he’s meant to be endearing, but I hate that guy with a passion normally reserved for the UNC athletic program.

You should know what you want when you get in the drive-thru lane! Stop holding up the fucking line, and take a lap while you make up your mind!

Yes, that’s exactly it. Some people “salvage” whatever they can before trading in a vehicle.

I did a similar thing when my car cratered - engine fried, sold for parts. Since they were lowballing me and since the thing was just going to be parted out, I salvaged the cargo net. I think that’s the only part of the car I removed.

Yeah, that’s because the"I may need that someday" doesn’t really hit when you are young and mobile and unsettled. You don’t really have space and you don’t want to be moving out all the time.

But when people get their own space, especially if they are buying not teeming renting, then habits of frugality emerge.

Keeping things because you “might need them someday” usually leads to drawers and closets and sheds and garages full of junk.

When a friend of mine bought her current car she realized that it didn’t have an ashtray. So she ran back to her old car, which she had traded in, and grabbed the cupholder-insert ashtray that had come with it.

My parents did that, so there’s a jar of screws and another of nails in the garage, and one of buttons in the sewing kit. My approach is to use the retail stores as my cache of such things, accepting that I’m paying them for the work of keeping such things stocked and organized.
