I’ve caught a commercial about people who are “Passive Progressive”. Apparently for some reason instead of getting insurance from Progressive they go around snarking on people who do, pointing out how they can afford to spend money on other things because they aren’t spending it on insurance. ---

Speaking of passive. How about passive rage? The “How do you sleep…?” (“All night long”) Those people are being really mean _because_ they slept well? Seems kinda backwards. ---

It’s almost as if some overwhelming cultural figure was making it cool to be an asshole. And if it made him a ton of money and won him the love of an underwear model, it must be the right thing to do. ---

A Volkswagen commercial I’ve been seeing a lot of is not annoying exactly, but strikes me as kind of tone-deaf. It’s for a VW electric minivan-- it’s driving down what looks like a non-USian street, with a soundtrack of a woman singing “are you having any fun?”. A little girl is a passenger in the van, looking out the window at a boy about her age riding a bike on its back wheel, in essence popping a permanent wheelie, with his front tire having been mangled in some sort of accident. The mood they seem to be trying to convey is, hey, riding around in an electric VW minvan, or riding a bike on its back tire-- it’s all fun! We’re having fun! But…the boy has no choice but to ride that way with the mangled tire-- is he having fun, or does he have no choice because his family is poor and can’t afford a new tire for him? the scene strikes me as more sad than fun-loving, happy vibes. I tend to read backstory into stuff though, so maybe it’s just me. ---

I love the VW commercial, or rather, I love the song. I hadn’t realized Elaine Stritch was …that fun. I must admit that I’ve only _watched_ seconds of it here and there and never caught the part with the boy on the bike. From the description and the message of the song, I take it as even if life hands you ~~lemons~~ a broken bike, make the best of what you have and enjoy it. I’ll have to pay attention next time it comes on. ---
