The Sapphire VISA commercial with the privileged plastic blonde and her annoying plastic blonde mom/friend bitching that her boyfriend didn’t propose, but at least she could get points for buying dinner. All I can think is the guy dodged a bullet and should continue to not propose. The theme, if there is one, is of clueless college football fans. In one instance the guy is a University of Michigan fan while in the other he’s a University of Texas fan. The commercials are, of course, airing during the football season. ---

The new Amazon commercial-. Daughter comes home for the holidays, goes to her old room. Dad in there on an exercise machine, wearing gym shorts. She is disgusted. Look, he is wearing gym shorts- _in his own home_. Nothing wrong with that. ---

No, it’s a middle aged dad with a paunch on a treadmill, wearing old school gym shorts (tight and short, like we wore in high school fifty years ago). It’s a commentary on his style choices, which his daughter finds objectionable. ---

I’m old enough that I sound like the people watching the “Don’t turn into your parents” commercials and thinking “Hey, what’s wrong with \_\_\_\_\_\_\_?” (being overly outgoing, giving strangers advice, joking around with the silent motorcyclist at the gas station). ---

I thought thought the girl in the ad was a college student. That said, her father looked too old to be listening to a ‘90s band like Collective Soul. REO Speedwagon or Steely Dan would’ve been more believable. ---

There’s an ad for what I presume is a private school that I’ve only seen on streaming services. Like most commercials, the volume is just slightly louder than the show’s volume, but not enough to be bothersome until the end when they zoom in on a precious little tyke, the volume suddenly increases, and he says # “MOOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEEEE!” It’s startling, and I’m surprised it didn’t destroy the speakers. ---

The college girl buying her dad shorts commercial and that dumb Reese’s Pieces/Kit Kat Halloween commercial both suffer from You Know The Trope Syndrome. They do not make any sense unless you know that dad’s are embarrassing and boys are terrible. The Halloween one where 3 kids knock on a door. First boy says, “Kick Ass!\*” and the other happily exclaims, “Reese’s!” And then a little girl appears and gets two candies because. . . girls are more deserving? There is nothing in either of these commercials that show _why_ these guys are deserving of our contempt except, you know, dads and boys. Yuck. \*I know he says “Kit Kat!” but it really, really sounds like “Kick ass!” to me. ---

The girl was wearing a costume in which she was half Kit Kat, half Reese’s candy. So she didn’t get rewarded with two candies because she was a girl, but because she was a more shameless corporate shill than the boys. ---
