Many movie stars are immortals who have had various identities over the years.

Alec Baldwin used to be President Millard Fillmore:

Nicolas Cage used to be a Civil War soldier:

I’ll ask here: what was the 50s (?) movie wherein an elderly professor was convinced his daughter was about to marry a seemingly immortal guy? The Cage pic reminded me of that.

This is what Google’s AI came up with when I entered your question:

* * *

The movie you are thinking of is the classic romantic comedy-drama **People Will Talk** (1951), starring Cary Grant as the unconventional professor Dr. Noah Praetorius and Jeanne Crain as his pregnant student Deborah. [[1](https://www.newyorker.com/goings-on-about-town/movies/people-will-talk-3), [2](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_Will_Talk), [3](https://www.facebook.com/CaryGrantsStyle/posts/cary-grant-in-a-scene-from-the-1951-film-people-will-talk-in-the-film-grant-play/1321793263291748/), [4](https://www.carygrant.net/reviews/people.html)]

The “seemingly immortal guy” in question is actually **Shunderson** (played by Finlay Currie), Dr. Praetorius’s quiet, ever-present, and deeply devoted assistant who carries a mysterious aura. [[1](https://fictionmachine.com/2025/11/27/review-people-will-talk-1951/), [2](https://oldermovies.quora.com/In-this-clip-from-People-Will-Talk-Mr-Shunderson-who-is-usually-a-silent-friend-of-Dr-Praetorious-played-by-Cary), [3](https://www.newyorker.com/goings-on-about-town/movies/people-will-talk-2), [4](https://gonewiththetwins.com/people-will-talk-1951/)]

Here are a few quick details about the film’s plot:

- **The Father’s Suspicion:** Deborah’s father, Arthur Higgins, is convinced Dr. Praetorius has a scandalous, perhaps unnatural past. He hires a private detective to investigate Praetorius, particularly focusing on Shunderson, who looks frighteningly old and hangs around the professor like a supernatural entity. [[1](https://gonewiththetwins.com/people-will-talk-1951/), [2](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043915/plotsummary/), [4](https://www.facebook.com/CaryGrantsStyle/posts/cary-grant-in-a-scene-from-the-1951-film-people-will-talk-in-the-film-grant-play/1321793263291748/)]
- **The Immortal Twist:** In a climactic third-act scene at a college hearing, the mystery is revealed. Shunderson was a “convicted murderer” whom the doctor saved from execution or a similarly grim death years prior, granting him a second lease on life—but to onlookers, his age and loyalty make him seem ageless or otherworldly. [[1](https://128writer.weebly.com/blog/people-will-talk-1951), [2](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/the-case-for-cleopatra), [3](https://gonewiththetwins.com/people-will-talk-1951/), [4](https://fictionmachine.com/2025/11/27/review-people-will-talk-1951/), [5](https://www.carygrant.net/reviews/people.html)]
- **Where to Watch:** You can stream this classic by checking availability on services like Amazon Prime Video or TCM.

That’s not it, but it sure sounds like it should be. But my show was far from comedy. Now I’m wondering if maybe it was an episode of something like Alfred Hitchcock Presents. There may have been his face in Civil War photos that was a tip off.

OMG That is adorable! I would mute that horrible ‘music’ every time. I never saw this.

The only channels I watch on tv seem to have just one commercial - for St. Judes. They run it ten times an hour…Listen, “Noah, 11 years old”, I am very sorry for what you’re going through, but the more I see a commercial from St. Jude’s begging for $19 a month, the less likely it is I’ll be dashing off a check.

Most of my commercial-viewing is online ads, which my browser mutes by default, unless I actively click to unmute them (and how often am I going to do that, for an ad?). Which ends up making a lot of ads completely incomprehensible. You’d think that the ad companies would have wised up to this.

Yesterday I saw a commercial for Redfin that used the song “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood (sung by someone other than him). I felt it was sacrilegious. I can’t image Mr. Rogers approving the use of this song for commercial purposes if he were still alive.

FWIW, Fred Rogers Productions, the non-profit which was originally founded by Rogers (as “Small World Enterprises”), and which continues to handle licensing of Rogers’ intellectual property (and produce new children’s programming for public television), granted Redfin permission to use the song, as well as approving Lady Gaga to sing the cover version that’s used in the ad (which premiered during the Super Bowl back in February).

Now, whether one believes that they betrayed Fred’s trust is another thing. My WAG is that Redfin was willing to pay a handsome licensing fee, and in an era in which public television’s funding and mission have been deeply damaged by the current administration, it may be that the leaders at Fred Rogers Productions made a financial decision that they might not have made a couple of years ago.

> Rights to “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” are held by Pittsburgh-based Fred Rogers Productions. The group’s president, Paul Siefken, said Redfin approached it about using the song, and the project seemed a good fit.
>
> “When the opportunity to have Fred’s core message of welcoming neighbors in front of the world’s biggest audience comes your way with a partner who’s like-minded, we worked very closely to make sure we were able to make it happen,” he said.
>
> “We wanted to make sure that whoever was performing was meeting our standards, again, of someone who not only brings a lot of respect and thoughtfulness to their work, but is also at the highest end of the craft, and Lady Gaga certainly meets the standards,” Siefken added.
