The meaning of wisdom- “Wisdom is NOT asking the question that you really dont want to know the answer”. For example- “What is that thing crawling on my back?” Bad. “Whatever that thing is, get it off my back now, and never tell me what it was!” Good. ---

I recently moved from NY to Pittsbugh and, boy, are there dumb comercials targeting old people. One is a series of Medicare supplimental insurance commercials mimicking the newscast it is usually shown during including lookalike sets and a “back to you” that jumps directly back to the real news. Another freatures ‘regular’ mostly older folks receiving acceptance into the Social Security program, crying with tears of happiness that they are getting $20,000. It is for burial services. And another series with only black people acting very, very badly with a bunch of 'gurrrrl’s and 'you know how it be’s making the point that ‘you get to keep the leftover cash’. I am not doing the terribleness justice. ---

For Diamondbacks baseball games, they have come up with this…unusual ad campaign. They have made a series of 5-10 second commercials for San Tan Ford, where the owner(?) of the dealership exchanges silly banter with the team manager. That’s it. They don’t mention cars, or even the name sometimes. Hooo.kay. But to make it truly annoying, the announcers then talk about the commercial, like it’s a mini TV show. “Oh what a good actor he is!” “Oh that was the best one yet!” Now I get more entertainment value out of Progressive commercials, but whatever. But wait! The funniest part (for the advertisers) is that a “proud sponsor” of the Dbacks is…Sanderson Ford. Who have real car commercials. And I’m like, as a person that tunes out commercials, is it…San Tan Ford, San Der Son Ford. Are they the same? Which one do I support? Aw, heck, let’s go get a Silverado. ---

OK, I get that the brand name is literally “Blue Bunny ice cream”, and that makes the choice of mascot kind of inevitable… but the animation style for the Blue Bunny is way too reminiscent of the Charmin bears, and that’s an association I very much don’t want to make with ice cream, thank you very much. ---

There’s this commercial for some kind of incontinence pad (Poise, I think?) where two middle-aged women are sitting at a cafe table with one of the women’s young daughter. The mother laughs and then says, “Ooops! I peed.” The daughter says, “That is so gross” and then the women go into a discussion of how bladder elasticity degrades during perimenopause. Now I am all for the fact that my generation (X-lennials) is being more open about perimenopause and its symptoms, but ladies! Please do not discuss this while you are eating! The daughter is correct, that is so gross so either take the conversation elsewhere or save it for a time when there isn’t any food or drink on the table! ---

There’s a commercial I keep seeing for a fancy brand of furniture called ‘Ashley Luxe’. It’s not the most annoying commercial I’ve ever seen, but it bothers me for some reason. Just strikes me as kinda dumb, I guess. So, a young woman is searching through her closet for something to wear to some fancy event or a date or something, and she can’t find anything she likes. She sits down on her Ashley Luxe couch in frustration, then suddenly she gets an idea-- you can almost see a light bulb above her head go on. She gets out a box cutter and starts going to town, cutting up the upholstery on her couch and tearing it up into pieces. Couch stuffing is flying everywhere. Next scene, she’s proudly wearing a dress she just made out of the couch covering. So, a few things here…caveat, I know absolutely nothing about fashion, let alone womens’ fashion. To me, clothing is nothing more than a way to keep warm and / or to prevent being arrested for public nudity, nothing else. But to me, it just looks like she’s wearing couch upholstery. Not to mention, it just seems weird to try to sell a product by depicting it being destroyed. “Our furniture is so fancy, you can wear it!”. It’s like a commercial for an auto company was sending the message “our cars and trucks are so great, you can take them apart and build other stuff with them!”. Speaking of Furniture , there is a commercial where Mom and Daughter (?) show up to look at the Daughter’s new place, only to be appalled by the flickering lightbulb. So instead of changing the bulb and opening the shades to get better light, they replace everything with stuff from that Swedish home furniture store. ---

I just saw a commercial that did not specifically annoy me, but left me wondering if they really did that. William Shatner touting the benefits of Kellogg’s high fiber, and referring to himself as Will Shat. ---

I got a new new, popping up like crazy now- PainQuil. Guess what it is? If you guessed Acetaminophen, aka Tylenol- you would be correct! Acetaminophen- where you can get 1000 count from many retailers for about $8-10 which is 500 doses or about 2.5 cents?. Painquil runs about $14, for which you get around 12 doses. Call it a dollar a dose. Bad deal. But wait- there’s more- Painquil is about10% alcohol, aka 20 proof. What do they tell you to do when taking a lot of Acetaminophen? Right- don not drink. Good lord, that’s going to get people killed. And I just saw one for an online casino that hits a new low. And for ads for online casinos, that’s very low indeed. “Are you looking for a job? Are you a single mom? Then try this game, that gives you free money!” I’m not sure how these casinos don’t get busted for fraud.
