That’s bad news. I only really got to know him when my then girlfriend about 25 years ago bought a greatest hits album. It was only then that I realized how many wonderful songs he had that also had been big hits apart from “Ain’t No Sunshine”.[“Live at Carnegie Hall”](https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-carnegie-hall-mw0000028997) from 1973 is a wonderfully intimate and lively affair and highly recommended. RIP Bill. ---

I used to do work for Bill Withers when I was in Hollywood (1970’s, 1980’s). He would personally pick up the lead sheets from my home/office and was very pleasant. I enjoyed his brief visits, and he seemed to like my work. ---

Very sad news. He had an amazing voice, was a great songwriter as well as performer, and by every account I’ve ever read, a kind and humble man. “Ain’t No Sunshine” is one of my all-time favorite songs, full of heartbreaking emotion. ---

Of course _Ain’t No Sunshine_ was comforting at different times in my life, but then again so was _Lean On Me_. Oh damn. \* Aint No Sunshine\* was a favorite song of mine. Takes me back to Florida and walking trips to the nearby lake. When that song would come on the little radio I carried, our little group would stop to sing along. RIP Mr. Withers. ---
