Airplane to ground communication question [about Scorpion TV show]

This was also a topic of discussion a few years ago, with respect to Frank Abagnale claiming in Catch Me, If You Can to have done something similar when being escorted back to the States. It was pointed out there’s no way you can access an unpressurized compartment from the cabin of an airliner once the doors are shut, even though this does happen in the book, which is supposedly a true account of Frank’s life of crime.

Apologies. I got to this thread from the New Posts page, and didn’t realize that it was a GQ. The part of the discussion I read made me think it was Cafe Society, but I should have double checked.

To be clear, that comment would also have been unacceptable in Cafe Society.

I’m trying to imagine listed on a Boeing 777 emergency check-list for communications failure:

62] Pilot proceeds to passenger cabin and ask if anyone has a cell phone they can borrow …

Because … you know … not all the passengers would panic …

You don’t think the pilot, co-pilot, or any of the flight attendants would have a cell phone with them?

I have to keep reminding myself that CBS shows are aimed at an older less tech savvy audience. I think I have watched an entire episode of Scorpion but only made it 10-15 minutes into the premiere of the new MacGyver. The short-lived CSI Cyber was even worse.

The older shows from my youth were no better. As the Mythbusters have shown, the solutions used by the A-Team and MacGyver were well removed from reality. I was just 8-10 at the time when they originally aired and I didn’t care or notice.

Some things that MacGyver did would have worked, and some wouldn’t. And some were deliberately changed, for the sake of safety of kids who might be tempted to Try This at Home. But they at least mostly steered clear of things that everyone knew wouldn’t work.

One of the stupid things about Scorpion is that they look for complicated solutions when simple ones will do. One time they had to break into a facility to get a bunch of secret written information. Supposedly the only one who could do it was Sylvester, because he has a photographic memory, even though the guy is afraid of his own shadow. Apparently none of these geniuses has ever heard of a camera.
