I was driving home tonight listening to Saliva-Every Six Seconds, and when it was done I realized that I enjoyed every single song on the disc. That rarely happens for me. Usually there’s a dog or two on there that I skip over, but not on that disc.

Then I popped in Garbage-Beautiful Garbage. Another disc that had no dogs on it. In awe, I thought about the likelihood of having two in a row that were good the whole way through and decided it was pretty unlikely.

Anyway, that got me to thinking: In your opinion, what discs, let’s say from 1990 on, have been worthwhile the whole way through? Here’s what I came up with:

The aforementioned two discs
Live-Throwing Copper
Queensryche-Empire
REM-Automatic For The People
Really, anything by Garbage. They’re consistently very good.
Pantera-Vulgar Display of Power
Pearl Jam-Ten
Jimmy’s Chicken Shack-Pushing the Salmonella Envelope

Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

Tool’s _Aenima_ and _Lateralus_; Red Hot Chili Peppers’ _By The Way_; the aforementioned Garbage’s _Beautiful Garbage_; and Disturbed’s _Down With the Sickness_.

Nirvana: Nevermind
REM-New Adventures in Hifi - Not all the songs are terrific, but no dogs either
Live - Secret Samadhi (Their newer albums are rubbish, aren’t they?)
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream
Dire Straits: Money for Nothing (Terribly 80’s, but I like it)

I like every song on the Notwist’s _Neon Golden_. Manitoba’s _Up in Flames_. I’ll second (or fifth, depending on how you count it) _Lateralus_ by Tool. And I think Doves’ _The Last Broadcast_.

I’d agree with _Beautiful Garbage_ if not for “So Like a Rose”. For whatever reason, I really don’t like that song.

I think that Live peaked with their first album, _Mental Jewelry_ (which deserves a mention), and have gotten worse on every album afterwards.

Here are my nominations, in no particular order:

Metallica, _Ride the Lightning_
Therion, _Vovin_, _Theli_, and _Secret of the Runes_
Power Symphony, _Evillot_
Leah Andreone, _Veiled_ and _Alchemy_ (her entire discography)
Clare Quilty, _Strong_
Morbid Angel, _Covenant_
Symphony X, _V_, _The Divine Wings of Tragedy_, and _Twilight in Olympus_

That’s all I can think of now without my CD collection in front of me.

Ooh, forgot Opeth’s _Morningrise_. It’s one of the most amazing pieces of art I’ve ever encountered.

And of course who could forget Green Carnation’s _Light of Day, Day of Darkness_?

They were called perfect albums in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?&threadid=196412) which threw up some interesting answers.

London Calling - The Clash. But of course.

And oddly enough, I’d also have to mention another rather less celebrated punk band:

Dookie - Green Day.

Amazingly enough, _Sports_ by Huey Lewis and the News qualifies. It’s one of those rare albums you can put on “repeat play.” All the rest of their stuff stinks.

_The Yes Album_ is a close second.
