> There is a better, more evenhanded and more soulful cut of that song on one of the boxed sets (I think it’s Biograph but I’m not sure).

There is one on the three disk Bootleg set also. But I prefer the one on **Blood on the Tracks** myself - and soulful and _Idiot Wind_ should not appear in the same sentence.

I’m surprised it took so long for Revolution #9 to show up. Those of us with lots of stuff from the late '60s have worse. _Sing This All Together (See What Happens)_ on **His Satanic Majesties Request** is nearly 8 minutes of awfulness which makes Revolution #9 sound like Beethoven. I suppose _Feedback_ on **Live Dead** might sound okay on drugs - which is one reason I’ve never touched the stuff.

> This is probably blasphemy, but despite having listened to _Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band_ approximately seven billion times, I _still_ hate “Within You Without You.” Not only do I not like it, I think it stops the (obviously otherwise perfect) album dead in its tracks.

I was going to come in and post that there is one song on SPLHCB that is soooo inferior to the others that it derails the album midway through.

Pulling up my collection, it is indeed Within You Without You. So, if is blasphemy, we’ll burn together.

Even some of the songs I like a little less, are OK.

This one should only be played in an opium den.

Eminem’s _Marshall Mathers LP_ has this skit called “Ken Kaniff” that’s nothing but disgusting sucking noises with a little bit of dialogue. I don’t even want to think about what the sounds are supposed to be.

Two rather similar examples, both from 1970s Brit prog rock (probably not coincidentally):

“Thank You” from _Bursting at the Seams_ by Strawbs. A bunch of little kids “singing” (in that vaguely-approaching-the-melody way typical of little kids) a saccharine tune.

“Thoughts on a Grey Day” from _Bare Trees_ by Fleetwood Mac. Somebody’s great-aunt reading the kind of pedestrian verse that a lot of British great-aunts apparently like to write.

Somewhat in a category of its own is “Just Like Gene Autry: A Foxtrot” from _Wow_ by Moby Grape. On the original LP, this track was recorded at 78 RPM – so you had to switch your record player to 78 to listen to it properly. (Back then, they still actually made record players with a 78 speed…)

The first Tin Machine album has two consecutive songs that I loathe: “Pretty Thing” & the astonishingly discordant “Video Crime”–between two songs that I love: “Bus Stop” & “Run.”

I made a dub tape that only cut “Pretty Thing,” & later regretted keeping “Video Crime.”

**Let’s Dance** isn’t Bowie’s greatest album, but it is pretty solid. However, it contains one of the two\* songs of his that I cannot stand - the final track on the record, “Shake It.”

Sample lyric:

> [@](#):
>
> I could take you to heaven
> I could spin you to hell
> But I’ll take you to New York
> It’s a place that I know well.

Seriously, Dave? SERIOUSLY?
\*the other one is the 1975 revamp of “John, I’m Only Dancing.” That one, at least, I can blame on the cocaine. By the time _Let’s Dance_ came out, he was off the stuff, so no excuses.

I started cassette mixing in the late 70s, and that was the first song I killed.

There are alot of these “skip past” tracks on Oasis albums. _Definitely Maybe_ has “Columbia,” Digsy’s Diner," and “Married with Children,” none of which I ever listen to. _What’s the Story_ had those “Swamp Song” tracks (WTF?), “Hey Now,” and “She’s Electric.” _Be Here Now_ had quite a few…“Magic Pie” springs to mind immediately, as does “The Girl in the Dirty Shirt.” Some of the B-sides from the singles from those albums were much better than some of the actual album tracks.

And the Capitol album (we were talking “Help!” soundtrack) had the instrumental pieces by George Martin that I actually _liked_ in the movie (and are part of my nostalgia for the vinyl version).

Hmmm… anybody know where I can get a CD with _(or an mp3 of)_ “From Me To You Fantasy”?

Back in the (pre-iPod) day, I would often claim that I was going to invent a CD player that you could program to recognize specific discs. “Then,” I’d say, “you could put in _Comes A Time_ by Neil Young and it would know to skip…” “Motorcycle Mama!” would come the immediate reply from most people.

This place [Taringa! - Inteligencia Colectiva](http://www.taringa.net/posts/musica/1156485/The-Beatles-Megapost---(63-disccos-hasta-el-momento)-Parte-1.html)

says to try this: [http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=989ff2c2a55adb687297544881c11c8b](http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=989ff2c2a55adb687297544881c11c8b)

It’s stereo, followed by mono.

Regarding a song for Ringo on the Parlophone version of the Help! album, the original idea was to include _If You Got Troubles_ instead of _Act Naturally_, which would have made more sense, but for some reason it never happened.

Every time I hear “Within You Without You” I think of Kevin Costner’s line at the beginning of “Field of Dreams” where he’s talking about growing up in the 60’s and says “I _tried_ to like sitar music…”

_Led Zeppelin 4, Battle of Evermore_. An ear-bleedingly bad track disrupting the flow of an otherwise epic rocking album. It’s given far too much respect and longevity because of its fantasy-geek lyrics. Once the “dude, elves!” coolness faded, I realized it sounds like someone tossed a bunch of pots and pans into a daycare rumpus room.
