Alec Baldwin [accidentally] Kills Crew Member with Prop Gun {2021-10-21}

Perhaps he wants to see her last film completed.

I wonder if they ask Hannah to grease the U-Joints on that Bus as long as she’s under it.

Hannah screwed the pooch on that job. Not saying she’s the only one with some fault but she was the freakin’ armorer, it was her job to make sure the firearms were safe to use as props, and to make sure everyone around her followed safety rules and procedures. If they had done that - followed what are, apparently, industry standard procedures in transferring a firearm from one person to another - the live round might have been caught before Baldwin started rehearsing moves with the gun. Maybe. In an alternate history. And Hutchins might still be alive.

I haven’t seen this email before. It should strongly support Reed’s claim that demands from the production office interfered with her primary job as armor and safety on set.

Reed is still responsible for the accident. But this email backs up her claim that she was distracted by her props job.

Link In email exchange before shooting, 'Rust' armorer said she needed to focus on weapons, not props

A key question is how did the live ammunition get onto the set? So far I haven’t seen a definite answer, but the most likely possibility seems to be that it was sent by one of the ammunition suppliers or perhaps the armorer herself provided it. What should have happened was that it should have been checked before being added to the movie production company inventory–but she failed to do this.

Reed definitely failed to perform her job. All ammo brought to the set should have been checked.

I hope time cards may reveal how many hours were spent working on Props compared to Armor

It’s probably more relevant to any civil suit against the Production company.

Back in my corporate drone days I had to specify how many 1/4 hours were spent each day on various projects, but it seems unlikely that a film production is going to track that. Unless there are union rule/pay-scale issues, I’d think a time card is going to be more like my canning factory days - clock in at 0600, clock out at 2200 (I’m pretty sure my breaks were paid time).

” Gutierrez Reed wrote, noting that on gun-heavy days during the filming, the assistant props role “has to take a back seat. Live fire arms on set is absolutely my priority.”

This would be funny if someone hadn’t ended up dead.

Even if , for some reason, a stray person brought the live rounds on set, they all ended up in Reed’s possession. None of the live rounds showed up anywhere that wasn’t under her control. I think if we do find out where they came from, it’s going to be her.

From the Guardian link above:

Witnesses in the case will testify Gutierrez-Reed was “drinking heavily and smoking marijuana in the evenings during the shooting of Rust”, a new court motion said, adding it’s “likely … [she] was hungover when she inserted a live bullet into a gun that she knew was going to be used at some point by an actor”, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed “did transfer narcotics to another person with the intent to prevent the apprehension, prosecution or conviction of herself”, the special prosecutors appointed in the case said in a court filing in Santa Fe county, New Mexico. They gave no further details.

I read about the drinking stuff early on, but this brings it back to the front. Plus smoking weed and actually having handy the day of the shooting. She really had no business getting this job. I wonder if she was hired based on her father’s history in the business.

Absolutely this is the case. That, and I bet she was much cheaper than a more experienced armorer.

Probably a little of both.

Hey, Happy Birthday!

Thank you.

I am surprised they didn’t have the preliminary hearing some time ago.

Trial starts December 6:

Kind of flew under the radar here: Two months ago, a second analysis was done on the gun Baldwin was holding. Today, prosecutors announced they seeking to recharge Baldwin (what’s stopping them?).

It’s easy (and proper) to say they’re reconsidering charging Baldwin. At the end of the day, it’s a whole lot easier to leave things as they are. So, maybe we’ll see renewed charges against Baldwin, but I wouldn’t think there is much appetite for it.

Special prosecutors said Tuesday they are seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin in the 2021 fatal shooting on a Western movie set in New Mexico by presenting evidence to a grand jury.

New Mexico-based prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said they’ll present evidence to grand jury within the next two months, noting that “additional facts” have come to light in the shooting on the set of the film “Rust” that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

So it sounds like it will be up to the grand jury.

What’s with the difficulty analyzing the gun? It’s a freaking revolver. There are few moving parts and a halfway-competent gunsmith should be able to tell you everything about its function in about 15 minutes.

Also, how do you break a gun like that testing it, which I believe was the claim. Revolvers like that are not easy to break.

No claim – there’s no doubt that parts of the gun were broken in the first round of testing. I don’t know the details, though, and I can’t heartily chide anyone for not taking the account at face value.

Well, the FBI did.
