> The ocean is a deep, deep place. And the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, it turns out, its pretty damn deep as well. Just check out this great infographic from Our Amazing Planet. \[Our Amazing Planet via The Daily What\]

(Just in case you want to see just how deep we went once…for 20 minutes…in 1960.)

I remember reading about the Trieste in National Geographic. The part the had people inside is the little sphere on the bottom. The big part on top is just a huge tank for buoyancy. It was filled with gasoline if memory serves. The ship is much like a dirigible, but operates underwater instead of in the air.

> Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe. In 1960, it became the first crewed vessel to reach the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in Earth's seabed. The mission was the final goal for Project Nekton, a series of dives conducted by the United States Navy in the Pacific Ocean near Guam. The vessel was piloted by Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard and US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh. They reached a depth of about 10,916 metres (3
