"Alien" nitpick

I’ve heard that was part of the film that got clipped during editing.

Photosynthesis. They *are *green, after all.

It wouldn’t have to even be eating food, as such. If it has acid for blood and presumably tough old veins to contain it, it could be eating cleaning products, old crockery, plastic bags, etc. All sorts of crap.

The part where you called him a threadshitting narcissist. Strictly speaking you were commenting on his behavior, and I realize that’s often the difference between an insult and a non-insult. But that’s overly personal and not called for. Your comments about the ratings of the movie would have done the job. I will say, RealityChuck, that your post came close to threadshitting. Keep this in mind for future threads about this movie or others.

I don’t know RealityChuck’s history with Alien, if he has one. That’s not really the point.

He thought it meant illegal alien when he bought his ticket.

I certainly thought it was. Chuck will bring this up at the drop of a hat. Whether it is full fledged or drive by hatred he’s there. A quicky search of CS using ‘Reality Chuck’ and ‘Alien’ will give you a quick overview. Given an opportunity to take a swipe at it he will.

In one he even equates Alien with Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. In another he lists it as one of the worst SF movies ever. He even lists it above Plan 9!

At some point it begins to look irrational. Respond to him and there’s a reasonable chance he’ll link to the article he wrote blasting the movie. Yet in other threads he justifies handwaving things like artificial gravity and so forth in SF.

We get it, Chuck. You don’t like the movie. But to pretend it’s one of the worst ever and to decry its faults while forgiving other films faults just feels obsessive.

Ah, that explains it. No one ever checks the contents of the sewage tanks.

Speaking as someone who doesn’t even like the Alien series, I’ve noticed the same thing, and even opened this thread *just *to see if **RealityChuck **had posted to it.

It’s a reasonable hypothesis, actually. The point, however, which so many pedants miss (not you, I’m speaking generally here) is that no one knows how they do it. They are mysterious killing machines whose ways are almost completely unknown. Why would you even WANT to know how or why they do anything? They’re the Bogeyman. They’re the Monster Under the Bed. They’re the Big Bad Wolf. They’re, you know, shoggoths and nightgaunts, doing malevolent things for some unknowable reason.

Knowing about them would lessen their impact. Hell, even seeing them clearly lessens the terror. That’s why Aliens, while still great, was not a horror movie. It was an action movie with some horror elements. By the time they got to the execrable Alien vs. Predator franchise, with its clear-as-day CGIed flying facehuggers and its extended fight scenes, meh, there was no horror left.

Who CARES why they grow so fast? They do, and that’s all anyone ever needs to know.

ISTR they are not shown eating in any of the films. Their blood can dissolve metal, and metal is easily available in all of the films. Maybe they just eat a couple of steel bulkheads and they’re good to go.

Just want to say that it was IMO a great movie, plenty of suspense, heightened tension and moodiness.

If every film was put under the scrutiny that Alien has had then Hollywood would pack in making movies.

Personally I think that the anti Alien campaign was started in the first place by a jealous rival in the business and was joined by a lot of Bandwaggoners.
But thats just my opinion.

Wasn’t the American version of Planet Earth narrated by Sigourney Weaver? Couldn’t she do a wildlife special called The Surprising Life of the Face Hugger?

Yes, but I haven’t seen you threadshitting every time this has been brought up. And I have noticed RealityChuck doing it as well.

Which sci-fi movie did you write so we can see what a good screenplay is like?

I think they had a section at the end of each Planet Earth episode where they showed you how difficult it was to get the great camera shots. That would work pretty well for Alien, I think.
