I did volunteer work for several years at an emergency shelter for children. I learned two important things there: 1. The results of child sexual/physical abuse are so incredibly heartbreaking that even the adult counselors and therapists that are helping those kids are affected. They, the adults who hear the kids’ stories, sometimes wind up in depression because of the horrors they’re hearing about every day. Not to mention the kids that have been betrayed, oftentimes, by the very people they should be able to trust above all others…their family members. I’ve heard their stories and seen the actual scars. Those memories still hurt today. 2. Children are amazingly resilient. Even after suffering through abuse that would seem to me to be insurmountable, many of them _do_ get past it and and are able to start growing and flourishing again…as long as they’re getting the help and maintenance they require. I believe that, if an adult were to experience the same type of abuse as those kids, if it was coupled with the guilt and helplessness that the kids often feel, the adult wouldn’t be able to handle it. I’ve also seen instances of the children being released from the shelter _back to the people who perpetrated the abuse_ after those adults had completed some kind of therapy program. People…listen up here… **Talk therapy often will not have any positive effect on pedophiles.** It’s my belief that there is usually something _organically_ wrong with them, and that it something that talk therapy cannot correct. The only things that I’ve seen that are efficacious are medication or incarceration. I don’t have any personal experience in seeing the effect of castration on an abuser, so I can’t comment on that, other than to say I’d be in favor of it–just for general purposes even if not for therapeutic reasons. One last thing…to Konrad: Oh, yeah, real funny. I don’t draw too many lines as far as humor goes, but pedophilia is simply not joke material. I’m so pissed off about your idiotic statement that it’s hard to maintain the decorum that’s required here. Stay away from my son, you fuck. I don’t know who you are IRL, but your stupidity, thoughtlessness and just plain repulsiveness would give you away. Phil - I was with you 100%, all the way up to that last post. I ask in all seriousness - is there no way to rehabilitate one who is a criminal pedophile? If not rehabilitate, then control the urges? “…removed from EVER having contact with children in any way, shape or form again” indicates, to me, life in prison with no parole, no access to the common areas or visiting rooms, and probably no outdoor activity of any kind. If there were some way to control the urges of pedophiles that would not otherwise affect their ability to operate as a normal human being, then I’d say “Go for it.” Unfortunately, AFAIK, pedophilia, as an orientation, is as hardwired as heterosexuality and homosexuality. Pedophiles will continue to seek children for their sexual gratification. The only way to make sure such people don’t molest children is to make sure they never encounter children again. What Canthearya said. Can’t say it any better myself. Dr. J: I think pldennison is right on this one. Most pedophiles and sexual abusers were sexually abused themselves as children, and have an overwhelming desire to perpetrate that abuse upon others. IIRC, part of the reason Megan’s Law (that a neighborhood should be notified when a convicted child molester moves in) is allowable by the Constitution is because the system cannot promise reform. Of course, these are just opinions and theories two steps above a WAG, so take them where you will. And Konrad? You have a history of outlandish and asinine statements that you stand by as your ‘truth.’ With that record, I’m not surprised that people weren’t able to denote the sarcasm in your post. ## Phil, I agree with you that the urge to pedophilia, from all accounts I’ve read, is organic and intrinsic to the individual. However, I also believe that it is possible for individuals to lead celibate lives. I know of no easy answer to this question, and there are few crimes more heinous than pedarast, but “eternal banishment from society” pretty much assumes that rehabilitation is impossible. - The best lack all conviction The worst are full of passionate intensity. \* ---

This is insane. People who TALK about having sex with children should be killed? Someone makes a tasteless comment (that I thought was abundantly and clearly satirical) and is now being physically threatened and people are siding with the person doling out the threats? I don’t believe there is anything so repugnant or dangerous that it can’t be TALKED about. That’s been demonstrated by Ayesha and others who’ve opened up about their own horrible experiences. Death threats to people who are insensitive to the horrors of pedophilia are almost as sickening as pedophilia itself. Get some perspective. And Mojo? If you’re serious about your threats to Konrad, you should get some professional help because you clearly have some issues you need to work through. ---
