Is it worth it to upgrade to the newer iPod if you don’t plan to use the video function? The battery just died in my 4G ipod, and it’s a little less than two years old. Do the newer generations provide increased battery power, or any other features other than the video capability and a color screen?
Yes the new iPods do have increased battery life and duration between charges. If you don’t need massive space or don’t particularly care about videos, you might want to check out the new Nanos. They’re cheaper, you can get the same amount of space (or more) you had in your old iPod, and they’ve dealt with the fragility issue of the old Nano by putting it in the aluminum casing that was used for the Mini.

I’d do a search on replacing the battery on your 4G. It’ll be substantially less than buying a new iPod.

The benefits to a 5th gen over yours are color screen for photos and videos, slimmer form factor, slightly longer battery life, and about 10 extra gigs of storage (assuming you have a 20 gig 4th gen).
Do the in-the-ear headphones stay in? I’ve had trouble with ones I’ve used with my portable CD player…they simply don’t fit in my ear and fall out. Are the iPod earbuds different somehow, or am I going to have to get some bajillion dollar custom jobs?
As far as I am aware the standard iPod headphones are just fairly normal earbuds, maybe a tiny bit better quality than the normal ones. But ever since I invested a few quid in my Etymotic ER-6’s, I haven’t bothered with any other headphones. They’re Grrrrrrrrrrrrreat. They also have a longer than usual cord, so I also got a Sumajin gizmo to adjust it - perfect for every occasion.
Exactly… 1 copy of iTunes is “tied” with your iPod, so if you connect that iPod to another computer, it’ll try to sync that library to your iPod. How else should it work? Just load the iPod up with everything on both computers? Yeah, this is for piracy, but also people like me who would go totally insane if that iPod synced like that. Then how would you delete a song? You’d have to delete it twice. Or 3 times if you’re synching between computers.
It’s really not that complicated. You don’t need to delete it twice. If you delete it on your IPod, it will automatically be deleted from your PC on the next sync (unless you specify not to do so). This works with any PC’s that sync with the device.

Palm software works like this and doesn’t have any problems.
